Actually the transmission is the same from the 135i. I can't remember where we said it was new but it's not. Sorry for any confusion.

Gabe, it's a new development for the 1M. See quotes below.

Transfer of propulsion power from the M TwinPower Turbo engine in the BMW 1 Series M Coupe is taken care of by a 6-speed manual transmission. This newly developed transmission features dry sump lubrication and is operated by means of a very short M gearshift lever. With its precise control and short shifts, the obligatory manual transmission perfectly underscores the purist, sporty character of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe.

The compact six-speed transmission with dry sump lubrication is a new development and has a weight of just 43 kg – much lighter than similar gearboxes.

Best regards,
south

Applying the marketing speak filter, this could very well be an existing transmission with modifications. Fi to the lower cast (material) and/or other internal oil recirculation particulars, to improve the lubrication under horizontal acceleration.

Does anyone know what other BMW transmissions weigh in compared to the 43 Kg?

That's my take but I could be wrong. I expect BMW to get a lot more specific about this and the engine internals next month.

Yes, 43kg + 2 quarts of oil.

Here's an update on the transmission. As indicated in the press release, it actually is a new development. It won't be exclusive to the 1M, but -- again -- it's new.

Best regards,

I, for one, don't like the idea of it being new. One very appealing thing about the 1M is the use of M3 bits that are proven already. A new transmission might sound good but I'd rather not be the first to test it. I am by no means jumping ship over it but I'd like to know more. Getrag? ZF?

Based on the near-production 1Ms seen at the recent auto shows, what tires are coming on this car? The newer Pilot Super Sport or PS2?

I would certainly hope it is the Super Sports, but I recon it is unlikely as they will continue to use the PS2s as they have rolled out the model already with them, and the production run will be short (and the same tire is on the M3, so it will be a logistical nightmare for dealers to keep inventory of both IMO).

The Super Sports are not available in the US yet. I have a set pre-ordered through Tire Rack (yes, you can already pre-order them and pricing is set, but estimated shipment is after 4/15 in very limited quantities and sizes). Does it sound familiar: not limited production, but wil be hard to get! LOL

The car at Geneva hat Pilot Sports on it.
Where can I see if it's PS1 oder PS2? There's no "2" on the tire.

Edit: Ah, "Pilot Sport 3" is another series for not so sporty cars.
So, there are Pilot Sport on it.

To clarify, there are actually multiple (generations and variants) of the Pilot Sports.

1. The original ones, ofter refered to as PS1s (although this is a misnomer as the tire sidewall simply states Pilot Sport) have been long discontinued (though you still can buy them as a replacement as manufacturers are required to keep extremely small production over a few years after a model is made defunct). The Pilot Sport (misnomered as PS1) looks like this:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....el=Pilot+Sport

2. The Pilot Sport PS2s, or the second generation of Pilot Sports meant as a replacement of the above^^^, are the ones we have seen on every 1 ///M so far. They look like this:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ilot+Sport+PS2

3. There is currently a Pilot Sport 3. It is not widely used (and reviews have not been kind), but nevertheless they are OE equipment on cars like the Audi B8 S4. They look like this:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=Pilot+Sport+3

4. And finally, the one I am hoping for, as it blows all ^^^ 3 out of the water, is the Pilot Super Sport. It looks like this (up untill recently, it was only available for sizing on the Ferrari 599 GTO):

They're sealed closed. Was it the E36 M3 that had rear triangle windows that flipped out?

The Moto GP Safety car appeared to have Pilot Super Sports on the rear and regular Pilot Sports up front.

Didn't catch a glimpse of it, but it would make little sense to have a mixed bag ot tires front and rear...

I would agree with you. Maybe BMW has a handling secret by putting differrent tread pattern tires front and rear

If you look at pic 1 and 2 on this post, it shows the different tread patterns.
