I presume that lower prices are for the stick and higher prices for auto box?
123d will be slightly more expensive than 125i then; with basic model RRP at $55,400. However with the higher luxury tax bracket the drive away price may be quite close... That may make buying the 123d a no-brainer and seriously undermine resale values of 125i

One way to look at the petrol vs diesel debate is to compare apples with apples (or the 335i and 335d). Both have straight six 3.0L twin turbo engines, the only difference is one is a petrol, the other a diesel. Figures are taken from BMW's UK site
335i Max output (kW/hp/rpm) 225/306/5800 Max torque (Nm/rpm) 400/1300 Acceleration 0-62 mph (sec) 5.5 Acceleration 50-75 mph in 4th (sec) 5.2 335d Max output (kW/hp/rpm) 210/286/4400 Max torque (Nm/rpm) 580/1750 Acceleration 0-62 mph (sec) (5.9) Acceleration 50-75 mph in 4th (-) So the petrol engine has about 7.5% more kw than the diesel. The diesel engine has 45% more nm than the petrol. The petrol has a .4 sec advantage to 62mph. BMW don't publish a 50-75mph figure for the diesel but i've seen sub 3 sec times bandied about on the web which is mighty quick if you consider the M3 coupe does it in 4.2 sec. Anyway, I don't want to take anything away from the 135i or 335i as they are both great cars and I don't expect to convert any of you to diesel addicts (I accept that 'one man's meat is another man's poison'). Just thought the above would add to the discussion we are having |

Good to see the 123d base price isn't too bad in Oz. Not much more than we pay here €28k. Might even be better if they come with more equipment standard in Oz. All we get standard in Europe is the air inside the cabin.

So if Porsche bought out a diesel powered 911 that was less powerful and slower than the petrol version but got better fuel economy would anyone buy it?

You're right, the 123d may not come with all the same equipment standard as 125i and that can account for a larger price variation once you add up all the options. But then it may not be the case, we'll have to wait and see. One thing for sure, I'll be test driving the 123d as soon as it comes to down under.

And the 123d engine is very quiet inside the car. Can even sound quite sporty when you get high in the rev range around 4500rpm. Certainly doesn't sound or rev like any other diesel I've ever driven. In fact, it revs so freely that I often hit the limiter in first gear because I don't have enough time to change....
