2009 Navigation System
Hi All,
What do everyone think about the new nagivation system design (built onto the dash instead of a flip up)? I kinda like the old one, but no choices I guess. |

Whether you like the new design or not, it is well worth it because the screen is 50% bigger and the resolution is 4x higher. Also, because it is HDD based now it is much more responsive.
And it is so much easier to use. Trust me, I have a 5 series loaner at the moment and the old iDrive menus are driving me insane.

agree very nice. Only wish the contacts would import via iTouch with address info so I could use them when needed..
but - 09 iDrive is great - even with iPod its great to see the song instead of the small 2 line display of the stock unit... so any advantages.. we could make a 1001 reasons to get the 09 iDrive LOL

Alas, but us early 1er adopters must live with our primitive system.....
(Still like my flip up screen though:wink

I was in the facelifted 3-series recently which had the updated business navigation, now with a display. That is an interesting mix of the old interface with the new controller (extra buttons)... not sure if anyone else has noticed. It still appeared DVD driven and not hard drive.
I wonder if that means someone will come up with a hack to update the controllers at least... |

We have an '09 iDrive with Business Nav it is DVD based but I understand the Professional version is HDD based (although that may just be the new music system which stores MP3s etc) Would have liked the Professional version but a) the extra cost is HUGE and b) we picked a car already produced and on its way which was part of the reason we could drive a harder bargain. On that note I am heading back to bed as I feel like I have been run over by truck. |

Don't worry mate. People ordering Pro Nav is still a minority. It is very nice, if you are willing to pay for it.
It is strange since I am a gadget man and not willing to pay $5K for the pro nav. I got a shitty portable free from the cooperate deal... that is not MP3 integrated nor showing the air con configuration

Hey Cam2801, you may have missed my comment - it was indeed a 'Business' navigation but in the facelifted 3-series. Oh, and also, sorry about the truck.
So you mean on the 1-series post iDrive update, Business navigation doesn't have a LCD display like the 3-series I saw? What about the new iDrive controller with extra buttons? Here's a picture of that 3-series I took. Note the small LCD display despite the full binnacle (compared with the Professional), the DVD drive and memory buttons like earlier iDrive Professional on the 1-series, and the new iDrive controller. |

Only Pro Nav get's full use of the screen. I recently saw Business Nav on the new dash-mounted system and it looks like crap compared with the flip up screen. Also, the functionality of the dial has changed, and you now need to either memorise all the buttons' locations and functions, or take your eyes off the road. I prefer the toggle of the current dial. Simple: left, right, up down.

The 09 Business Nav in the 1er has a screen that appears to be identical to the one in the picture above. Full sized binnacle with small screen with identical controller. |
