Supersprint Muffler Install/Review
Finally got my car back and got the time to install my Supersprint muffler. Still need to get the auto leveling arm repaired(or just have them give me the part as it takes two seconds to install), but the car was pretty much good to go. Like most of my writeups, there will be a brief DIY with some install tips.
Install This is definitely one of the easier projects on the car, but like anything, good tools are part of it. You will need: 3/8ths Drive socket wrench 18mm socket 14mm socket 12mm socket 8mm socket Inverse torx of a size I forget.... Angle grinder Dremel Here is where I started. The muffler came well wrapped and shipped direct from Supersprint Italy to my door. After I got the initial boxing and bubble wrap off, I got to this: For anyone who saw my recent nod on Supersprint's Facebook page, or in my teaser post a couple weeks ago, this should look familiar. It arrived exactly how it looked before they shipped it out. Bravo on getting it to my doorstep unharmed. At this point it is time to get to work. To install an exhaust on the 128i, you sadly need to cut the pipes. For whatever reason BMW only found it necessary to make the exhaust of the E46 M3 sectional. Most of their other cars are solid pipes back from the headers. To get access we start by removing the rear diffuser. To do so you remove the 8mm screws underneath and pull the pushpins out from the top. Once you get the diffuser off you should be able to see both exhaust hangers. Leave them alone for now. Support the stock exhaust where the pipes come in with a jack. At this point you will be ready to measure and cut. This is where the angle grinder comes into play. It really cuts through steel like butter. Be careful not to let it skip and snag your aluminum suspension bits, it is very unforgiving. If you need to, finish the top side of the cut with a Dremel. When the pipe cuts free, the exhaust will swing forward on the hangers unless you have it supported by the jack. Now you take it off at the hangers. Annoyingly, the driver's side hanger is welded to the car, so you will need to pull the exhaust free while it is on the car. For the passenger side you can just undo the bolt and deal with getting the hanger off on the ground. At this point you should be left with a nice hole like this: This also gives a nice preview into my next write up, those TC Kline suspension bits. From here, fit your new pipe, clamp it down, transfer the hangers, and clamp the new exhaust to that. Installation is super easy as the majority of the work is the cutting. In the end, you should be left with something like this: Review I got exactly what I wanted. With the headers already in place, and this car being a daily driver, I wanted near stock(with headers) sound levels with no drone and to eliminate the rattle I had from the Golf Tee mod. This exhaust nailed that. I picked up a bit more throaty roar on WOT, but other than that it isn't obnoxious at all. Clearly as she breaks in the sound will change a bit, but for now I continue to be an extremely satisfied customer. My only remark is I might get Evolve to raise my idle as it sounds like a beast on the cold start idle. Sound clips will be up soon, I misplaced that new external mic I ordered. *Edit* Photos rehosted because Photobucket is trash

Also curious how it sounds. I have the same rattle on my muffler that you were plagued with.. it wasn't present until i went catless.

Good stuff right here - love your write-ups. Bring us a sound clip after a couple hundred miles or when it settles in, por favor!
Are you really done?.. Is this really the final piece?.. The last brush stroke? |

Yeah, i wonder how much demand there needs to be before a cam can be made.

Frankly, on the cams, it couldn't hurt. The more interest they see the better.
