Steet: Modded 135i pulls aside of me on the freeway and tries to race me. After he notice I did not want to race, he rolls his window down and screamed something out of his car I could not understand. Takes off on me one more time with his emergency lights flashing

Dealer: Long Beach BMW is retarded period. Saying my 1M had modified rear over fenders. The shop foreman came out, 35 yr veteran, and said "Yes, this car definitely is modified, it doesn't look anything like the 1M we had on our show room". He then goes alone by saying he owns a 135i and knows what the car is suppose to look like. I LEAVE PISSED

Seems like ever time I go to the dealer, no one has seen this car. Everyone usually thinks its a modded 135i

If you dont want a dealer comparing you 1M to a 135i here in socal, go to Newport BMW.

Reactions

BMW guys seem pretty cool to nod their heads or give a thumbs up. One guy said "I love you"... Well whatever.

Non-BMW guys go gorillas and Chase you down in hopes you are going to race them; often they are Breaking a lot of traffic laws in the process. Punk kids are the worse... One guy chased my girlfriend and I down the hwy, stuck his tongue out, and licked his driver side window... Another whatever situation.

Pick-ups: these guys really have negative reaction to my 1m passing them... Often resulting in unsuccessful road-rage.

In sum: it is a mixed bag

Why not ask the majority of the site directly? Most of the people that recognize the car quickly are probably on these boards anyway and post in a spotted thread.

So what the question really is would be "How do you PERCEIVE how other 1er people react to you?" Because unless you get out, talk, and get a feel for the person, you have no idea what their reaction truly is. Which is whyI will try to pull up and talk to you.

I never recall a thread titled "How do 128i guys react to you?" Back when there was no 1M. But I guess the brand really does attract certain people.

As far as the mod comment goes, I have been a car enthusiast all my life, and I've found that MOST people that are the type to socialize about cars also INDIVIDUALIZE theirs. The members of this forum prove my point as you can see. I would call the sole act of owning a GT3RS a sign of an enthusiast. Hardly along the same lines as owning a 1M. I'm afraid your notion that mod=insecurity could also be viewed as self-justification for you maybe not being able to acquire any. See how that works? I'm glad that you are past that rationale.

In the end, I wanted to offer my view, since you know, I'm a "1 series people" and that view is what I stated above. I would still pull up next to a stock 1M and try to converse, but that is more because he is a 1er brother. But unfortunately most cars (however sporty they may be) usually aren't the kind to want to talk cars for a while. Obviously there is a -/+ there but hopefully you can grasp that.

I feel, IMHO that topics like these (which seems genuinely well intentioned), foster responses that will eventually tear the 1er forum into two groups a'la M3post. And I hate to see that happen, as I've "known" most of you before there was a 1M in the M departments dreams. Please prove me otherwise.
I don't need to prove you otherwise, no matter how many smilies you include in your posts. I still think that your first post here was not for the purpose of contributing, you could tell some of the things you are telling now before and it would be perfectly allright. Actually, I even think closer to you than you imagine about the feeling you expressed in the last paragraph you wrote. There is just one point I want to remind: unity is fine, brotherhood is sweet and everything but there are too many differences between M cars and the standart line-up. I know you are not a believer and you call 1M as a 135M if I remember correctly and I think it is as close to 135i as it is to M3 and yet it is really different from both but you are more and more in the minority in this mocking of the 1M fashion and these forums are mostly about those differences and nuances we want to talk about.

I am going to make my little daughter sleep buddy, that is more important to me right now than continuing this. Happy new year to everyone already since I better be off for a few days.

Well you are entitled to your opinion, as I am mine. I don't try to persuade anyone. I never mocked the 1M, perhaps peoples pompous ideals in owning one, but not the car itself. I love it. Believe it or not, we 1er people were actually hoping and were led to believe it would be more in the beginning.

And the smileys weren't for you. <-That one is. I don't even recall ever seeing you on this board. Have fun being so "elite".

The question is weird because isn't a 1M a 1-series too? In any case, for almost 6 months I was a "1-series owner" with a pipe dream of owning a 1M. The few times I saw a 1M in person before I got my allocation I was ecstatic. I've owned an obviously modded 135 for many years in the DC area and never got a thumbs up/wave/smile from anyone, let alone other 135 owners. During the few weeks I've had my 1M it's been the same.

Honestly, if you bought the 1M to get attention from others then you bought the wrong car. I think we all need to realize this forum is a bubble and that most of the people in the real world have no clue what a 1M is, including the 99% of BMW owners who are not members of this forum.

That said, with the kind of attention/hateration being described in this thread I'm glad noone notices me around here...

it's not about attention, never really cared about it, but it's just simply wrong comparing 128i and an 1M... don't get me wrong 128i maybe a good car, but not even the same league. Around here 135i is as rare as an 1M, in fact I saw 135i about the same count of times as I saw 1M(s).

3 series are everywhere...

i have only ever seen one single 135i vert (bmw dealer show car) and one e82 123d with all performance parts (some attorney) around here

due to high base prices and our ridiculously high monthly engine tax these are very exclusive cars where i live

other than that 1series people mostly drive a hatchback 118d or 120d

so i cant comprehend these 135vs discussions

so far most 1series drivers recognize the 1M they slow down and check it out - some even smiled and waved

On the first day I got my car an e46 m3 downshifted next to me to race with thumbs up, but didn't. Seen an e46 3 series coupe take a glance and thumbs up and another e46 m3 ask about the car at a red light. I don't really notice anyone unless they take an effort to be noticed. All that really matters is that you love your car ... and that I truly do. I stare and admire my car more than anyone that passes by

The 1M must have some sort of secret magnet on board: some cars behind you seem to glue to the 1M's rear end, and when overtaking you at cruising speed, keep sticking on the side for a moment or two, as if they struggle to pass by. How bizarre.

Hence my careful wording of "other 1-Series people" in the title.

Please note that my OP was not meant to be divisive. It was simply to survey the excitement that the 1M has brought to the BMW community overall.

I used to get a lot of attention in my M3, although getting attention was never my intention. But the 1M's rarity and distinct design has attracted enthusiasts in a very positive and exciting way. I feel privileged to be in the driver's seat of this instant legend.

That's an odd and frustrating experience. Did you go to the dealer for service and they denied you because they thought the car was modified? If so, I'd probably send BMW NA a friendly message notifying them of that dealer's incompetency.

BMW lists the 6MT 135i as 0-60 in 5.1 seconds. When Motor Trend tested the 1M they did 0-60 4.2 seconds, the same as their own tests of the M3.

Not sure I'd call that equal...

Though I agree with you 100%, this is a battle better left alone given the amount of 135i drivers in denial. I come from a 135i and I have verified that my 1M blows the 135i out of the water

Only saw one 1M on the roads so far, but I threw a thumbs up. I stole my sisters lexus for the day so I doubt I was noticed.

Usually when I compliment M owners, I'm ignored, snubbed, or even attempted to be provoked into a race. Only a few times have I had a positive reaction. But that's the M3/M5 guys. Met a couple 1M owners in person and you're all great guys (though some on here seem to have big heads ). We are all enthusiasts in the 1er community, so why can't we all be friends?

Comparing manufacturers' published times versus actual test times is a moot point.

Well, not a 1 series driver, but I do a silent WOOHOO! every time I see one. Love seeing them on the road, and in general I always notice and pay more attention to a 1series on the road. Next time someone gives you a woohoo, pleas give him a ride ;-)
