Front plate must be centered?
I had my car in for regular service today and wanted to get it inspected as well (at the dealership)...
So I put on the tow hook bracket and throw the front plate on. Apparently, the inspector would not inspect my car because the front plate must be centered on the car. What kind of BS is that? Maybe I won't have trouble with a local place...

wow that is BS. Sometimes it seems like they'll look harder for a reason not to pass cars instead of trying to get it through.

According to your 540 CMR 4.00 of the RMV in Massachusetts, "Both license plates must be mounted in the proper location on the rear and front of the vehicle, if the vehicle has been issued two plates." Apparently, the "proper location" is a gray area and that inspector didn't like it off to the side.

It annoys the shit out of me that now I will have to spend more of my time to get this done because the inspector (or maybe someone higher up) decided that proper can only be interpreted one way. I think I am going to have to bitch about this.
Maybe the inspector saw how clean the plate was and just wanted to spite me...

I have the tow hitch mount also and my dealer was perfectly happy with it. they even asked me to get them information on it so they can order them for there customers that don't want to drill the front bumpers. all they wanted was some sort of permanent like mount(no zip ties)

I don't get that, especially in Mass, when there are still a lot of green plated cars out there, with only one plate. I must have a cool guy do mine, because I always forget to put the front plate on, and he never says anything.
Sounds like the "Only in the center position" guy was being a bit of a dick. |

I went to a local place down the street and they thought it was cool and asked where I got it...
If anyone wants to know, the person who does inspections at Foreign Motors West must be pretty picky.

Nice work, but I don't think you will get the point across unless you take your car back with the form filled out and a copy of the email. Most people like that will keep doing what they do until they get their pee-pee smacked.

Say no more! I should've known it was Chambers... Worst dealer on the planet. Unless you toss C Notes at them, they don't even talk to you, and I have quite a few friend denied warranty claims there, that get done elsewhere without any hassle at all.

Foreign Motors West (which I guess is Chambers now)...
My normal service was great. They replace the wipers (without me asking), microfilter (without me asking), grabbed a sample of my oil (with me asking) so I can send it off to Blackstone for analysis. Overall, I was happy, just the inspection nonsense that bugged me.

After filling out the after-service survey, the service manager was nice enough to call me an apologize about the inspection issue. He said they had their inspection license revoked about 4 months ago due to an infraction, and hence were being a little bit over cautious.
He was nice enough to offer a free detailing (not car wash) for my trouble, which was nice. I don't imagine they would give anyone else with a tow hook mounted plate any problems...
