Bumper-to-Fender clip
Hey Guys,
Hit a pretty nasty bump on the road the other day on the drivers side and it broke the clip that connects the fender to the bumper. The section in the picture attached. Now the bumper is coming out a little about half an inch or so. Has anyone replaced this clip and is it a fairly simple process? Or is this clip even available to purchase for replacement? Thanks in advance!

It should be a fairly simple process, however I've not worked on BMWs in particular. On some cars you need to loosen the fender liner so you can reach everything, but i'm not sure on the 1 series.
I'd also replace both the clip and the bolt just in case the clip is stripped (and i doubt you have the bolt since it came out while driving). |

You should search for a DIY on the front bumper removal (with pictures) but I will try to explain how the bumper is connected to the fender. The edge of the bumper has a tab that slips into a black plastic piece that is attached to the fender. If you take a close look, you can see the black plastic piece recessed between the bumper and fender. It almost looks like a gasket between the bumper and fender. The bumper tab snaps into a slot in the black plastic piece on the fender. The black "gasket" is the top of the slot. Once snapped in place, you can still move the bumper a little bit to allign the bumper with the fender. Once alligned, the pinch bolt in the wheel is tightened to keep the bumper in place. Before ordering anything, I would try loosening the pinch bolt, push the bumper back to the correct position and retighten the bolt. You can do this in a matter of minutes and don't even need to jack the car. Just turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and you can gain access to the bolt in the wheel well.

Thanks for the info guys.. I will take a look and see if I actually still have that bolt or not but it does sound like it is no longer even there.. Prior to hitting the "bump" the tires did rub on those clips for a good while.. I was even contemplating taking a dremel to shave it down a little to stop the rubbing..
