Exclamation $475? WHAT?!

Hi all,

So recently the plastic cover in front of my fog lights on my 2008 BMW 128i had a small rock hit it. As a result, it cracked.

I have a full warranty that expires on 2012, but the dealership doesn't cover this since it's not a material defect; they would cover it if the crack was from the inside, but you can feel the crack from the outside - meaning that an external force was applied.

With labor and parts, it will cost $475 since they would have to replace the WHOLE bumper just for that tiny plastic crack.

Is there any cheaper way of fixing this? Thanks all..

the correct way to fix that would be with an M-sport front bumper.

there isnt just a lens cover that can replace the broken one instead of an entire bumper??

i think they just have to remove the bumper .. but they can replace broken fog light lens with another for 145... maybe parts and labor included is 475?

They said parts and labor is 475 and they have to replace the whole bumper for that. That's the best of my knowledge on what he said.

^^yup, they lied. Go find a new dealer that will take care of it. You can always try claiming it under your insurance co comp claim. In most cases zero deductable for stone impacts.

^^Yes, a comp claim can not count against your driving record and for most states a comp claim has a zero deductable for all glass (windshield, mirrors, fog lighst, ect).

Whoa - I could be wrong, but I doubt the whole bumper would need to be replaced simply to replace the fog light lens. As the RealOEM diagram above shows, it's a totally separate part.

Is your bumper cover pretty much okay?

The bumper is completely fine ... just the fog light lens is cracked. The actual fog light bulb, etc. are fine.

By the way, this is BMW of Mountain View telling me this. I'm going to call them again on Monday to make sure what that guy told me is true.

Do you guys know if you can replace the lens without having to remove the bumper?

I have replaced the front bumper on my 128, it's not hard but it is time consuming.

But the part and take it to a local body shop have them swap out the lense cover, this case you won't have to pay $475 for BMW labor.

I think he meant remove not replace the bumper coz OEM bumper surely costs more than that.

I dont know what moron quoted you that amount of money to replace a fog lamp assy... but it is way high..

That lamp for a non-m sport front bumper cost 145.00 ish..

The bumper DOES NOT come off to replace it... it is done from behind thru the wheel well liner.. at most on a bad day it should be no more than 1.2 or 1.3 hrs labot tops... even at 135.00 per hour labor rate total wont be more than 300.00 bucks....

If you are paying moe than that then you are getting ripped off.

If you want to save yourself 150.00 bucks and you have a floor jack and an 8mm and 10mm socket, you could in fact do it yourself.

Good luck..

In the US, the deductible for comp is set by the insurance company not the state.

You are correct that comp claims can only increase the premium on comp and not on collision. Depending on the insurance company, your premium may go up, but generally, one claim doesn't result in a premium increase, generally.

Hey everyone..

I just realized that I had some photos from BEFORE I took the car home from the dealership and realized that the foglight case was ALREADY cracked. This means that it was not my fault and was the dealership's mistake for not fixing it before it was driven home.

I have a full warranty that covers bumper to bumper. Will this be able to cover it now that I know it wasn't my fault and was already cracked to begin with?

I assume you purchased the car with the broken plastic cover, and that the dealership overlooked it. The dealer has the option of not fixing it or they can provide some good will and fix it without charging you. Talk to the service manager.

I have the exact same crack on my car. maybe it's a problem that happened to a lot of cars. i haven't taken it to my dealer though. as my warranty ends in about 5000 miles i probably should..
