Retrofit Homelink (BMW Universal Transceiver)?

Has anyone tried to retrofit the Homelink rear-view mirror? I'm not interested in getting the Premium package, but I would like this feature if possible. Is it just a matter of getting the rear-view mirror and hooking it up? Is this a big project?

Thanks

There is a retrofit harness. Installation is very straightforward. Check over on e90post for retrofit instructions. I have all the parts but doubt I will be installing an autodim mirror in my 1.

I don't really care one way or another about the autodim mirror -- but if it's cheaper, can you get *just* a regular mirror (no compass or anything) with the homelink buttons? I assumed I'd have to get a 1-series mirror... And how much should I expect to pay?

The UGDO mirror has the autodim feature. I do not know of one that has the UGDO and no autodim.

Retail on the UGDO mirror is $649. Though they pop up on ebay for a lot cheaper if you are cool with a used one. Retrofit supposedly requires coding which will add around $100. I am not sure if the coding is required or not though. I was told the coding was to correct issues with the auto wipers once installing the new mirror.

The cheaper solution is to get the E46/E39 transmitter ($179 retail), mount it in the headliner and then wire it to ground and hot-switched power. You would still have the manually dippable mirror but none of the risk of the failing autodim mirror.

You mean this one?

http://www.bmw330ci.net/projects/homelink.php

This'll fit in the 1er? (Again, don't own one yet, just thinking prospectively....)

That’s the one. You wouldn’t be able to mount it in that location as that panel has a big control box on the back side of it. What options were you going to order on your car?

I actually did this retrofit to my wife 2007 X3 a few months back. The X3, 1 and 3 series used the same mirror. I pick mine thru e-bay for about $250.00 with compass, homelink and dimming feature.

You will need a 3 wires harness from the dealer for about $38.00. It can be found cheaper online. 2 of this wires will become grounds and the third one, switched power. Power can be obtained from the sunroof switch wire.
If you take the e-bay route make sure to pick a mirror for a 2006 or newer car. 2005 and older is not the same mirror as the one series.

NO DEALER CODING NEEDED!

PM me if you want more info about it and a part number for the wirring harness.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but IMHO 3 series have different mirrors than 1series (I mean shape...)

I am not sure, but the UGDO mirror is the same across all models.

When I took my wifes 2007 X3 in for service last week; The dealer gave me a 2008 328 sedan as a loaner. The mirror was the same shape as the one on my 135i and X3.

The 135 came with the homelink mirror; but I retrofit the one on the X3 with homelink and compass.

when I have some time; I will put together some instructions on how to retrofit one of this mirrors on the 1 series. It is very simple.

Most are going the Flash2Pass route:

Flash2Pass Garage Door Opener System
http://www.europeanautosource.com/pr...roducts_id=619

Take the $600 you save and buy some other mods for your 1er.

How about this:

$17.99
+

$1.59

Velcro it in place inside your driver's door panel map pocket. And presto-chango, you gottum cheapie cheapie Universal Garage Door Opener. Did this in my MINI Cooper, works great.

People are running the kits already, installation is a simple 2 wire connection to your 1er's high beam circuit. A double-flash of the high beams triggers the garage door to open.

Pin # 5 Small Brown Wire with Yellow stripe (+12V flash trigger lead)
Pin # 2: Large Brown Wire (Ground)

This picture would show placement:

This picture shows some extra details of the install:

Thanks to Zyphen for taking time to snap photos.

A garage door opener clipped on your visor is equivalent to leaving your car keys on the driver's seat.

Possible retrofit

I have asked Jason @ getbmwparts.com to check into a retrofit kit for a homelink mirror. I wanted leatherette for the main reason it looks good at any mileage so I didnt get the mirror with Garage door opener. This is the same part used on the E90 retrofit so it could be the same procedure, plus you dont have to have the car coded after the retrofit .

Here is the part number along with its description

61120434330, description is Retrofit wife, review, electrocromat

Here is realoem link to the part, believe its like $26 on getbmwparts.com, ask for Jason , he is very good to work with, very responsive, no days of waiting for an answer, hes quick, plus getbmwparts.com are approximately 20% off MSRP pricing which is 10% more than you can get with the BMWCCA discount plus depending on what state you live in, no taxes, another .

Is the retrofit wiring harness real easy to install? Does it just hook into the sunroof control panel? If I find a good deal on one of thes UGDO mirrors on e-bay, I might try this out.

Just picked up an 08 3 series mirror with homelink and dimming to try a retrofit into my 135i. I assumed I needed the harness but a quick wire count of harness ends and it seemed like they matched up. I plugged the new mirror in and went to start her up....

and

nothing... the car refused to recognize my comfort access key.

Swap back the original mirror and it starts.

Really? The rear-view mirror is integral to the car recognizing my keyfob?!?!!?

Any thoughts or pointers?

I just finished installing an autodim mirror from an MZ4 (much nicer mirror) in my 135i. The best DIY can be found here

A few notes.
1) Disconnect the negative battery terminal (and leave the trunk open)–this is in the pdf document but way at the front and you are playing with the car’s computer, you do not want to short anything.

2) The BMW retrofit harness has a solid brown ground lead going into the mirror side connector. When you open the stock mirror you will find that the solid brown would go to a brown/white wire location. Remove the solid brown wire from the retrofit harness, you do not use it.

3) No coding needed.
