Installing BMW CC Grill Badge
Last year saw the BMW Club badge on a 1er at O'Fest and liked it. Passed it up at the Club booth and regretted it later. BUT this winter the club had a 3 year sign up deal, with a free badge. Thats all it took--nice marketing. Here is how I did it for those interested. Yes, I know, no pics, but I am the Forum idiot when it comes to downloading pics...much less the red circles some of you guys add...but here goes. A writer editor by trade, I shall endeavor to explain. You can do this without removing the grill--which was a complete boon.
Lifting the hood, and facing the motor, you will note--between the grill area and the horizontal wide intake plenum, two small 5-6 inch "caps" or attached scoops each held by two simple screws. Choose which side and grill you would like to use. Using a 20 torc driver, remove the two small black screws that hold these "scoop caps" to the radiator wall/intake plenum. Gently lift up ]were attached by the screws] and wiggle free from its seating area. They are not clipped on, and neatly fit under a series of raised bosses. Now you are free to reach in behind the grill to tighten the nut holding the badge plate behind the grill. I did glue the brass badge holding post into back of badge...and cushioned [glued some nice rubber pieces] the actual back bracing plate that holds the whole unit to the grill. Then inserted the plate and nut [I added a lock & flat washer which was not provided] then hand tightened to as much as possible. Then with a small 9/32 wrench, reached in and tightened the whole sha-bang. I also placed some silicone RTV sealant over the nut and screw post to keep it from loosening from any vibrations. Replaced the "scoop" by inserting front [ie.closest to grill] edge back under the obvious little indents, lowered it down till it all lined up nicely. Replaced the two original screws back into place. I wiggled the plenum a bit to make sure all the the piece & holes and black screws were lined up, got both in place finger tight before cinching down on either too tight. That was it...looks great now, and it was a fun little mod. |

Would be interesting in seeing how this came out - I love the look of the badges on vintage BMWs, but haven't seen one on a 1er yet. Can't make up my mind as to whether it would look right or not.

Didn't realize how big it looked on a 1er. Isn't there a rectangle one (contemporary) available?
edit: Found it. Still looks to be pretty large, judging by the screws and assuming they are the same ones.

Yeah, maybe a little too large. I'm still not fully convinced one way or the other.
What size are the decals? |

It is not the large rectangular badge...and yes HondaGR its the USA shaped one . It does not stop the air flow...and it is not large. The reason for it? If you have to ask why, then its not for you. Its like black wheels.
I go back to Brit days when grill badges were welcome, and it looks very nice, its small, and discreet on the 1er. Its a nice addition to announce the club thats all. Prof T?? I said I did not know how to do that-- I apologize, but thats the way it is when I wrote it. I'll have to check out the whole issue of pics being transferred into the forum someday. BTW--the club has the USA smaller grill badge version, and its great. |
