Found this at auto,motor und sport. The new 1-er will also come in a 4-door wagon configuration and, for cost savings, will form the basis for the new 3-series (yes I had to read that twice to be sure) not the other way around. In 2011, one year before the intro of the new 1, Mercedes will introduce a competitor in the form of a compact rwd coupe.

Reading a little more, for the euro market, BMW will expand the 1-series engine lineup with a 3 cylinder motor starting at 110hp. The turbo 4-cylinder choices will go up to 240hp.

There will also be:

- HUD available for the 1 series
- 1er GT (like 3er GT and 5er GT) as a competitor to the Audi A3 sportback
- 6-cylinder engines will get Start + Stop Automatic
- New 340i with a new 6-cylinder engine with 326hp

Stop&Start in the city is actually very very very very very very very very very fun. I love it when I'm driving people and my engine goes off at a traffic light and then you see them trying to work out what happened. And the fun of being able to control the engine starting and stopping in a style you aren't used to. Not only that but I'm sure it does help with the fuel economy also...
