Anyone else bending rims a lot?

Has anyone else found that our stock rims are more prone to damage than on some other cars? Is the suspension that gives such a nice ride/handling balance not so great on sharp impacts?

I've had 3 bent rims and 1 cracked rim in about 9000 miles. Mostly, I'm chalking this up to factors that are not the car - Boston roads, bad luck and some bad driving on my part. (I've hit some potholes that I should not have.)

But the thing is, a few impacts seemed pretty minor to me, yet sure enough I picked up an imbalance that turned out to be wheel damage. I was surprised by that. I'm wondering if anyone else has had found this car any more susceptible to damaged rims than some others.

Hell, I'll put steel rims with thick sidewall tires on this car if I have to, it's so much fun to drive. I'm just wondering if it's all on me, or anyone else is having similar problems.

Merry Christmas!

I damaged 3 of the 4 OEM 17" wheels on my '99 328i within two years of buying it. I've since learned to be super cautious in avoiding our DC area potholes and have sustained little wheel damage since. In the winter, snows mounted on 16" steel wheels go on the car which helps significantly, but unfortunately, I don't think any steelies are available for the 1 series.
And with the 135i's 18" wheels, you are even more susceptible to road damage.

Avoid potholes. The low-profile tires (especially with the run-flats) will transmit all the shock of a pothole strike directly to the wheel.

Bent rims in everyday driving? You need a tank.

Why are there potholes in the road? You pay tax; the roads should be great shape. Where I live if I see a pothole, I call a number at the Transportation Department to report it; they come out and fix it within a day. Perhaps there is a program like that in your area.

I have heard of people filing a claim with the City if there car gets damaged by not maintaining the road properly. If your wheel gets bent from a pothole I would think that is a safety hazard. Imagine if your tire blew from hitting a pothole, your car veered onto the sidewalk and hurt or killed someone. I would think the city would have to take some responsibility.

I drive the speed limit on NYC local roads. Some of the roads around here are absolutely terrible.

They still have paved roads in NY?
When I left there a few years ago I figured they would have reverted to cart paths by now

You might have better luck running 17's.
8800 miles without a problem with my wheels.
Our roads do not take a winter beating like some areas.

I think you just have bad luck. After 11500 miles I have had 1 bubbled rft and no broken rims.

Roads in LA suck. Bent the 4 OEM wheels on my Z4, then bent 2 of the 4 replacements on that car. Guarantee that at least 1 of my wheels on the 135 is bent.

Mind you I'm super careful and have driven modified cars my entire life, etc... but it never fails. I guess it gives me an excuse to get new wheels from time to time, but since there is nothing attractive available for the 1er yet that leaves me with having to spend several thousand dollars on something forged (HRE/360/iForged, etc), but then those will get all dinged up.

As far as getting the city to pay for a car repair caused by their roads.. LOLOLOL.

I'm in CT and the potholes can accumulate here too, especially now after the spring thaw. I'm always hesitant to purchase add-ons from the dealer but something told me to go with the wheel/tire warranty. Sounds like it may come in handy.
