Going out of warranty!

So I will no longer have warranty past December, 2013 on my 2010 135i. Bought the car with 31000 mls and it now has 41000. Been pretty reliable except, had to replace the Comfort Access passenger side door handle and the main CA module. There is an odd smell coming from the AC vent, which I am having them looked at right now, while under warranty.

I asked my local bmw dealer about extended warranty and maintenance.

Warrant - $3700 for Platinum warranty!
Maintenance - $2000 for 2YR/100K coverage (Covers brakes, clutch, oil, o2 sensors, brake fluid, wipers - not really worth it IMO)

I decided against both and figured I will test my luck! I can afford them, but rather not "waste" the money.

So, that brings me to my question.

What things should I get done on my car after warranty expires to ensure its reliability?

Here is what I want to get done when the car's warranty expires:

- Walnut Blasting to clean the intakes.
- Transmission and Diff fluid changes to Red Line synthetic oil
- Oil/Filter change (Got the last one at 40k miles)

Suggestions? - Your input is much appreciated!

I just purchased a 45k mile 135i, so am not so far off what you're going through. In addition to the above, I will be replacing the spark plugs. Probably will do the oil catch can too after walnut blasting.

Sounds like the maintenance plan for $2k isn't worth it cause hard to imagine you'd rack up service bills of $2k in 2 years for routine things even if you took it to a BMW dealer and paid their exorbitant costs, unless you drove like 15-20K miles a year. Even then...

But like Enlightened, I'm curious how long the extended warranty is for and what is/isn't covered. I know they have different tiers, so you may want to consider a lower tier that's just mechanical stuff that might not cover things like the radio/nav, depending on the cost of course.

I'm also wondering, having never purchased an extended warranty, can't you still negotiate to get them down to a lower number, or is it a by the book/chart, this is your car, this is what it costs for this long?

Ask for a quote on the Gold warranty (less money) - I think the only difference is that the platinum covers the radio.

You might also want to call around to other dealers - I'm reading that Pacific BMW has a good price on the extended warranties, as do other dealers. Maybe look for some of the dealers that advertise in the back of Roundel magazine as selling discounted parts. Seems like the 6/100 platinum warranty should cost $1,800-2,200 - not $3,700. And it's the same BMW-backed warranty.

Here is what all the warranties cover.

If I can get platinum coverage for $2200, I will pay all that in cash right now. But no, the $3700 is what's on their sales sheet, so I don't think it is negotiable.

Spark plugs are covered in the 4yr/50k warranty. They should replace those at 45k miles or third oil service. I just got an oil change and spark plug replacement at 41k.

It is negotiable. There is a stickied thread on a group buy that is no longer available. They shopped around different dealers and got different prices.

Wasn't there people here who mentioned some BMW dealer in Tenn. somewhere that has a guy devoted to just selling extended warranties and at bargain-basement pricing?

Yes its negotiable, it doesn't matter where you guy it so long as its a real BMW dealer.

I thought the Plantium Plan was basically the Gold Plan only added the navigation system which is specifically excluded from the Gold Plan?

Also, don't you still have 9k miles left on the 4yr/50k standard warranty?

It would be great if someone can tell me which dealer to get cheap warranty from. I am in Atlanta btw.

Yes the platinum covers nav and a few other things. The difference between gold and platinum was $300. My car is fully loaded, so it makes sense for me to get the platinum.

Try:

Pacific BMW
Cain BMW (Canton, OH)
BMW of Roxbury (Kenvil, NJ)

Roxbury gave me a sweet deal on a performance exhaust earlier this year, and was easy to work with. I've heard the same about Pacific.

Good luck with the Atlanta dealers. I had serious service problems with both of them (northeast and north/northwest sides of town), as did everyone i knew. BMW needs a third player in that market

Thanks! I will contact these dealers and see what kind of offers I am getting.

That sounds about right. I got quoted $3700 for 72/100k Platinum Plus warranty. Some of these guys mentioned that other dealerships are selling the warranty for somewhere between $1800-2200. If I get those prices, that would be awesome!

Sounds like you are being quoted at FULL RETAIL. There is obviously plenty of room for negation. My friend (he has an X5) called every BMW dealership he could find (he just called the ones in the state he lived in) and had them all give him quotes.

In the end, BMW of Austin gave him the best price.
