Delay in Accelerating

I put my foot down and there is a probably about half a second before anything happens. Having never owned an automatic before, I'm unsure if that's just what to expect as the necessary clutches, etc engage. However, it's very annoying. Or is this just a quirk of our electronic accelerator (that I didn't know we had until I was told just recently)?

Thats drive by wire smoothness... But drive by wire CAN be faster if it is designed for quicker response. The E46 M3's have a "sport" button that makes almost a super instantaneous reaction.

Wonder if this "sport" button idea can be incorporated into the jb3.

Perfect example is a buddy and I (me = 135i, him = M3) were playing around with these reaction ideas. Every time he would jump half a car on me before my car would GO...

Agreed, annoying...

Talk to Andrew @ Southern BM and get a sprint booster. Makes a world of difference.

It's an automatic.

From standstill.

Perhaps I should be more explicit in my original post in future.

I'll have a look at the sprint booster (although I'm always concerned about warranty issues).

as for warranty issues, it takes about 10mins tops to install/uninstall it.

You're taking off in 2nd mate. Put it in Manual and select 1st and watch the difference

In auto mode? Or DS? Like the others said, if you take off in DS mode or in first gear there is little delay. In auto mode it takes off in 2nd gear.

And I still experience a significant delay in my car.... but only because I'm still crap at driving stick Haven't got the whole launch thing down pat yet. Was beaten off the lights by a stock 350z today and I WILL NEVER LIVE THAT DOWN.

But yes OP, put that thing into sport mode. The only delay you'll be experiencing after that is your heartbeat returning to your chest.

The delay is trademark of BMW.

I was really tempted for sprint booster until the price got me and I sort of get used to the DS mode lol.

Sounds not unlike the lag that affects the M-DCT tranny in the M3 but I would imagine it's due to different reasons.

M-DCT has lag that's inherent to all double clutch set ups.

I experience similar delay, but for none of the reasons experienced above. When the car is cold (eg for first 10mins), at appropriate times the car puts itself in neutral to save fuel. When you take your foot off the gas it puts it back in gear....sometimes with a bit of rollback and big jump. If it annoys me, I just manually flick the paddle into 2nd and it then stays in gear whilst I'm stationary. DS mode does same thing, but for peak hour, DS is a bit too full on.
