Crackle and pops - JB4 vs PPK1
I was wondering if PPK crackle and pops can be obtained with JB4 as well. Apart of the big $$ difference, I'm not sure I want the loudness ALL the time (may change opinion after the fact) so it would be nice if it were "optional" depending on map used.
Thoughts? |

Yep the software in the DME is different, causing the pops and crackles on overrun. JB4 is just a piggyback so it doesn't really alter the DME software at all... Just "tricks" it. And on my car, the pops and stuff only happen when I have the sport button pressed, and trans in sport mode.. So it's optional. Not sure on 6MT cars.

Mine has crackles and pops on deceleration in gear with just JB4 and an axleback. Can't say I've heard a car with PPK1 in real life though so I'm not sure what the difference would be.

it all depends how it's tuned
more fuel = more unburnt fuel = more pops and crackles. so yeah JB4 should give some, even more with a back-end flash for more timing etc. |

My JB4 on an otherwise stock car did a hell of a lot of crackling.
I'd wager the JB4 can give you MORE crackles and pops than the PPK, simply because the JB4 can be used to keep the exhaust flap open the whole time. |

So are there any off the shelf flashes available that don't cost lots of $ that give all kinds of burble action like the PPK? Does the BMS backend flash do this?

I'd imagine the cobb tunes will too, but I have no experience with them. |

I've got a JB4 but it doesn't make anywhere near the same amount of burble that I've heard in videos of PPK with stock exhaust. I've got golf tee/canflap. I think I read that JB4 can't adjust the fuel / timing appropriately to do it

Go into debug mode and change Speedometer option 10 from Tach 80 to Tach 0.
Wastegate position at 0 will give you the rumble and pops that you might be looking for. Good luck!

No, it will be less because the wastegate will be fully open during idle and light acceleration instead of partially closed. Metal(lic) noise should actually be covered up if you have any preexisting rattle. Of course it all depends on how bad you have it IF you have any rattle prior to making adjustments.

If I understand correctly, this should yield the same sound at light throttle positions as map 8 (reduced power mode)? I often drive around in map 8 just for the sound lol

A lot of these people don't know what they're talking about. In their defense they are surmising due to what makes sense but these cars don't really make much sense. lol. The DME software is the only way to increase the pops and burbles. A JB4 isn't going to make a difference. I'd like to see a video of someone with a JB4 set on map 0 make less pops than the same car on any other map. I had the pops on the initial software revision for my 2011. After an update to the DME they were nearly gone. My friend with the same year car with PPK sounds completely different. That thing pops and bangs like crazy. I have 20 pounds of boost with the JB4, he has 11 with the PPK.

If you really wanted to, i'm sure you could get the JB to batch fire it rich post-shift for that "bang" everyone likes, or throw a bunch of fuel at it when you get off load.
It's really not that complicated...
