Angry Back Order For Third Brake Light

Found a crack in the middle of the third brake light two weeks ago and today leaving to take the kids to school there is the lens in two pieces on the ground - phoned dealer and there is another two week wait for the new brake light so they said just put tape over it so water won't get in - thanks. Check your third brake light and if there is any cracks phone and order now so when it pops out you won't be driving with tape on your trunk lid!!!!!!! As per another thread there seems to be a problem with the third brake light lens cracking and eventually falling out.

it's a pretty common issue. I've seen a few come into our dealership and mine is starting to chip on the far right side. (I'm a CA at BMW Durham)

There is a national back order on this part due to the original design being defective.

DO NOT get yours replaced until the backorder is over. Otherwise, you'll get the 1st gen part that is being broken due to some gaskets or rivets that aren't properly aligned to the contour of the trunk lid. Well, at least that is what a little birdy told me.

If the lens falls out make sure you let "BMW" dealership tape up the opening as you don't want water getting in the hole. They told me just to use any tape (duct tape) but I said that I was coming in because if they place tape on the my car and damage the paint then they are responsible and not me. They had no problem with with spending some time taping the gap.

You can get the updated part, but they can also use the original design and use washers/spacers. It was mentioned in one of the roundtables.
