He's in Boston... Might as well make use of their public transportation and/or a bicycle.

Or maybe a Segway?
Yeah Ma sucks on insurance and they said where I live ( Malden) doesn't help even thgh I park in a full garage ( behind my house, and car has an alarm) they basically said it's cause I'm not even 3 years on my license and I'm 20 and it's a Beamer ...

I'll save about 1000 on my insurance if I get a truck and in feb 2013 it'll be cut to 1500 a year cause I'll be 3 years driving... Seems like I'll be doing this possibly n I'll try to get a 1er in 2022 when I'm 30 lol and I won't have to bend over and take it up the a** for insurance haha

Usually rates go down significantly when you hit 25...

Who is your insurance? I have Nationwide and I have totaled one car due to a deer and have had about 4(?) tickets in my lifetime of driving (22 years old). My old car, 05 s2000, cost less monthly than a Honda Civic Si, but the 135i cost less than the s2000. Which I found to be very strange seeing as how the s2000 is a small 2 seater convertible sports car....and also found it strange the Si cost more monthly than the s2000.

BTW, have you quoted other vehicles with your insurance company to see what premiums would be? Because I'm adding a Ford Focus to my policy, and it's only $20 cheaper per 6-month policy period than my BMW is, so I'm thinking that the 128i is not that much (relatively) to insure. Granted, the Focus will be brand new and the BMW is 2 years old, not sure how that affects things. And I'm 35, married, in a totally different part of the country than you, and probably insure through a different carrier - so obviously it's not apple-to-apples. But I'm thinking your high premiums may have more to do with your age, driving history, and location than with your 128i.

Buy something, anthing that does not have a lien on it. Full coverage is full coverage no matter what you drive at your age.

Recommend any E36 is semi reliable and relativly cheap to maintain and easy on gas compared to a quad cab pick up. Save the money and spend it on the ladies...your young you have plenty of time to get anything else you want.

True enough. At 20 years old, a car note would have been a major liability for me. Crushing debt is no way to start your adult life...

Granted, some 20 year olds can afford it (usually it's their parents doing the affording, lol), but I'm guessing the OP doesn't fall into that category if he started this thread.

Neither of my cars ever had a lien against them. I haven't had a car loan for several decades now. I also made sure my kids had something to drive without having to borrow money but they are doing fine and can make their own decisions now.

I have large, 500 or 1000, deductables for a similar reason. I don't like paying it but I can. I had to have some body work done on my SUV after somebody hit it in a parking lot and drove off. Fortunately my insurer (State Farm) covered it under the uninsured motorist (after I made a police report) so the deductable was only $200. If I'd done it under the collision it wouldn't have been worth turning in to insurance.

Perhaps it is better to live by the creed....

I spent all my money on fast cars and women.....the rest was wasted.

Key word here is 'and'...not OR...so buy the best car you can and drive it like its a Ferrari and care for it like its a classic Bently.

Ouch. I'm currently paying $307 for 6 months. Full coverage with GEICO.

It's interesting how there is so much discussion about the cheapest premiums possible, but very little on coverage.

I have $1,000,000 combined single limit, $500,000 under and uninsured motorist, $50,000 medical payments in case one of my passengers has shit health insurance, and loan payoff. My annual premium for the 128i is about $1100. I could get that down to $500 or $600 if I dropped coverage to state minimums.

I have one other driver and two other cars on the policy, total annual premium is $2400. It would be $2000 but my SO got a speeding ticket last year. Provider is Liberty Mutual.

This is a good point. State minimums are very low. Cars are so costly to repair these days, you could be out of pocket a lot of money if you are at fault. I recommend at least 300k/150k.

Seriously? A $100 per quarter leap because of a speeding ticket? That's awful...
unless of course either you or your SO has a *cough* "checkered" driving history

I don't think you'll be in the business for long. No offense, but there's a reason why premiums are so high for 20-year-olds that speed. Fair or not, you're perceived as being much more likely to get in an accident than some one older with a clean record.

I'm 24 and spend ~$800 / year for good coverage. No speeding tickets or at fault accidents in 9 years of driving. I turn 25 this summer and am really curious to see how my premiums are affected.

They're OK. I was lightly rear-ended by an uninsured motorist a few months ago. One downside to Geico is that you don't have an actual agent... just whatever random person you get on the phone when you call. Each person I talked to was competent and surprisingly knowledgable about my claim, but I still didn't get the personal attention that I would have had with an individual agent. For what Geico costs, the compromise is more than worth it. I was surprised how much cheaper Geico ended up being over any of the other companies I checked. Even USAA was substantially more expensive.

I should also mention that when it came time to have repairs made I chose one of their express shops and was glad I did. Each shop has a full time geico employee who looks after the repair for you. When the shop put my bumper back on they forgot to put one of the bolts back on the right tail light which meant it wasn't fully sealed to the body. When it rained later that week water got into the cavity beneath the light and fried one of the computer modules down there. It ended up being a $600 repair, but the geico guy at the shop made sure I got compensated for it quickly.
