Basically, you're getting a sawed-off 3 Series Coupe at a significant cost-savings. The '08 135i starts at $35,725, and $39,925 for the convertible. That's 6 to 10 grand less than the '08 335i, which starts at $42,025 for the Coupe and $50,325 for the convertible.
Man I have been arguing this point to 3 series owners forever. It always come down to but wait I can get a stripper e90 335i vs. an optioned 135i therefore 335i is better valued. DOH My head hurts

The 1 Series came out in the U.S. last spring and, so far, BMW has only sold 9,280 of them.
Wow, that's less than I estimated. No wonder we see so little

I would have guessed much lower.

Interesting article and nice find!

Interesting that these are the stock photos from the Feb release. Great summary article. I still think all of these things are true - the best car you can get for the money.

Without doubt and in the UK they are rare too so you feel kind of distinguished driving one.

Ah, nice to see a reviewer who gets the concept that having a smaller car can be a good thing - handling, acceleration, economy, gas mileage etc.

I could've gotten a 335i. Heck I could have gotten an M3 (still tempting me , but the 135 is a great car, and you just never see any of them. It's the 'cheapest' BMW but it gets a lot of looks because they are so rare. Only 9280 sold as of Sept? Wow, no wonder I have seen only 1 other 1 series in 2 months of ownership.

I hear ya. I live in Burke and I have only seen one on Fairfax County Parkway going in the opposite direction. I, too, were going back and forth about the 335i coupe. I felt the 1 did handle slightly better and I like the exclusivity of owning a car that not many have. All I get is huge compliments from people I work with who see my car. Some say a 1-series? I've never heard of that? I like that!

They only planned on selling 10k 1ers in 2008, so they are right on target.

Exclusivity isn't hard to find in a financial crisis... but it's tough to find 1's out there and they do have that pretty blue and white badge.

How do you guys feel about driving a car that's perceived as 'overpriced'? It doesn't matter to me either way, but do people ever treat you like you've got more money than brains?

That's what I remember as well - they will easily hit that mark while the rest of the auto industry royally tanks. That says alot about our cars.

Price it right, make it available with a stick and the 300hp twin turbo, add a BMW badge, and you've got a winner!

i think people who aren't enthusiasts concentrate on the badge and comparing the car to a bloated 3 series.

several people keep asking why i didn't buy a 3 series. and i honestly don't know what to tell them, because i wasn't looking at 3 series. i waslooking at z4mcoupe and honda s2000. how would a 3 series possibly compete with those cars?

and people really concentrate on the badge. i wish it was a honda, it would have better quality for sure. but honda doesn't make TT 6 cylinders and nissan charges $90K for them. so its not overpriced, i think, but i whish it didn't have the pretty blue and white badge, but rather a hond or toyota badge and the quality to go with it.

really - you guys getting this??

"However, my test 135i did better than rated. In more than 1,700 miles of mainly fast highway driving, I got 28.3 mpg. The 128i is rated to get 18 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway, so it would probably do noticeably better than the 135i"

It's funny, but in the last 10 years, while all the publications lauded the 3 series (e46 ,e90, e92 and e93), the only real gripe was BMW may be making the size their sporty entry level cars almost too big. Don't make it any bigger they said. I am getting this car (replacing an e46 vert) not because it costs less, but because it's smaller and more nimble, which are attributes Bimmers have been known for. The great savings is icing on the cake.
