High pressure fuel pump replaced.

My VO with 16,500 miles just had the high pressure fuel pump replaced. The car took up to 10 seconds to start. I had the same problem with my 135. Brought it in and got a new pump under warranty. I'm changing the oil every 3k. This car is the most fun car I've ever had in my limited experience.I'm 69. My son has a 2011 M3 and is amazed by how much attention this car gets when he drives it.

Did you have the HPFP replaced at Bramans?

Ah yes, HPFP time! We all knew it was coming, we just all hoped it wasn't true!

And oil changes have NOTHING to do with it.

The first registered HPFP failure in 1M. I hope others won't follow and this will remain "Number 1 of 1"

Are these engines in the 1M under the same "N54" warranty with 135i HPFP failures?

Guys this is the first pump to fail. All of these HPFP's from all Auto Manufactures have a fairly high failure rate (Google HPFP Failures)

Remember the Fuel pump isn't part of the N54 engine, it's a separate system that feeds fuel to the engine. BMW is using HPFP's on all of it's Turbo Charged cars, as does all Auto Manufactures that use Direct Fuel Injection on their cars.

The 1M's engine code is N54T.

That is slightly different engine code from the N54 in the 135i's. Time will tell if more HPFP's fail or not. I wouldn't panic... these cars are still made by humans and some parts will go bad. That's what a warranty is for.

Uh-oh, it seems that the dreadful HPFP gremlin is not extinct yet: now that would rain on our 1M parade...

I wouldnt worry...

but to correct above. The HPFP is part of the engine N54, N54T, even N55 ( at least mounted to it and it is driven mechanically ) it is fed by a low pressure pump in the tank...just an fyi for those that dont know

Actually I'm aware of one other one. Local dealer has a 1M that the owner is driving now until he decides to sell. It has already had its HPFP replaced (had my sales guy look up the history on the car just in case the owner wanted to sell it).

I wouldn't jump on the HPFP bandwagon just yet. 1-2 documented failures out of what, 1000 or so owners/posters that know owners here? I'd say for now no reason to start taking painkillers just yet...

Totally agree - I heard that BMW bought out the manufacturer just to get the issue fixed. I have not heard of many of the current gen going out on the N54s.

Stop whining. It's under warranty and I'm sure that it's rare. This is the first I've heard of in how long this car has been out. Wait till yours goes to complain.

I was under the impression the engine code for the 1M is N54-B30TO. Was I mistaken?

Yes, that is correct. But a lot of times people just call it the N54T for short.

The horror. Oh the horror. IF this happens I will have to drive a few miles to the dealer, get a diesel 3 series loaner or x5 or whatever I want, then drive back in a couple days and pick up my car with a shiny new pump and a car wash to boot.

Granted it would be better if it didn't happen but to me this is an extremely small blip on the radar of lifes problems..

Anyone know what it would cost to have the pump replaced if it fails out of warrenty?

I have a VW 2.0 TDI that has a history of HPFP failures that the NHSTA is investigating. If it fails out of warrenty it will cost 10 grand to get it replaced because it takes out everything downstream...can you say injectors. Im guessing/hoping that if the HPFP fails on N54 it does not do that...
