Just bought a 135i and it has a CEL already, power loss?
I literally just put down the money on the car, haven't even gotten the tags in the mail yet, and we're already having issues, the car only has about 48k miles on it. I was slowing down at a red light driving normally when I heard a backfire, I checked the oil temp guage at the time and it was under 250F. Not long after that the car flashed up a check engine light and the car lost considerable power when accelerating. It's still driveable, but it's a little rough from a stop. Power delivery seems not as smooth anymore. Putting the car in neutral and revving the engine sounds fine to me and I hear the turbos wind up, so I hope we can rule out bad turbos or a misfire. It seems at first glance that the car only has issues when in gear, which would lead me to believe that the transmission is bad... oh lawd I hope I'm wrong. I think the dealer is going to pay for it though, so it is what it is. Another interesting fact is that when the car turns off and starts up again there is no CEL, and the engine check from the HUD menu says CHECK OK, but once you get moving it CELs again.

Damn, I remember when you were on here talking about getting rid of your shit car for this... I hope everything works out. Mine died a few days after I bought it but it was under warranty...
Keep us posted, hopefully something easy to fix. Dealer better step up.

did you buy this from a dealer? if you did that you are protected a bit so the dealer must pay for it.
"The Used Car Lemon Law was enacted in 1996 to protect consumers who purchase a used car from a New Jersey dealer. The law requires that the dealer provide a minimum warranty (30 day / 1000 miles, 60 day / 2,000 miles or 90 day / 3,000 miles) which is based on the vehicle’s mileage at the time of sale. Only components of the power-train (engine, transmission, front and rear wheel drive) are covered under the law. The law does not cover vehicles sold for less than $3,000, are more than 7 model years old, have been declared a total loss by an insurance company or that have over 100,000 miles on the odometer at the time of purchase. If during the period of the limited warranty, the dealer is unable to correct the problem after 3 repair attempts or 20 calender days out of service, the consumer may qualify for relief under the law. No certified letter from the consumer is required. Accepted applications are scheduled for a hearing at the Office of Administrative Law (O.A.L.) at one of three locations: Newark, Trenton or Atlantic City. There is no filing fee. In order to prevail in a Lemon Law case, the consumer must prove that the defect substantially impairs the vehicle’s use, value or safety. |

Great News! I was poking around the engine compartment when I found a piece of tubing disconnected. Connected it back up and CEL is gone and power is back. The only thing that remains now is that there is a rather harsh rattle or scratch sound on cold start. Other than that, engine runs fine seemingly.

I think it's mostly fine for now The tubing came undone while I was downshifting using the paddle shifters instead of the brakes, it just popped. It seems to be the line that goes from engine to turbo, so it's obviously a high pressure line and the ring seemed a little loose, I'm not surprised that it popped out. The scratch sound is a quick sharp scratch coming from the rear of the vehicle, which from my research seems to be some kind of flap in the exhaust system opening. Supposedly it's normal. I don't know if it just started happening or I just started noticing it? It's only day 2.

Still having issues or did you get them resolved? Maybe you realized that the car makes noises you are not used to?

Nahh, once I reconnected the tube (charge pipe as my research states) it has run perfectly. The exhaust flap still screeches from a cold start, but I'm used to it now. I'll be installing both an aftermarket exhaust and aluminum upgrade charge pipe soon, so neither problem will persist for very long. Thanks for the help!

The rattle you are hearing is the exhaust flap. If you do the golf tee mod, or even better do it via software with a JB4, you won't hear it IMO. Plus your exhaust will sound nicer in the lower RPM's. Win Win.

Sometimes I think the ride could be a little better, the roads around here aren't the best kept up sometimes, and the car having sport suspension and all means I feel every little bump and jostle and it makes me a little light headed. People say the run flats don't drive too well, so I'm hoping once I get some new summer performance tires that'll go away. Aside from that, holy hell. Feels amazing to drive, great to look at, and a ton of fun. That's what I don't understand when people say "a car just needs to get you from A to B" but my view on it is I need to get from A to B regardless of what car I drive. I might as well get a car that makes A to B to C to Z fun... and that's why I'm here |

@BMW135pls everyone should own a code reader. You can buy one of those OBDII can/bus bluetooth dongles and then download BMwhat app or Torque App for a few (~$5)dollars. You can use the BT dongle with your smart phone to read, clear codes. You can also data log and do some other cool stuff.
