The General Altimax Arctic tires tested #1 in the Studdable Ice and Snow category against other studdable ice and snow tires. They will not perform as well as studless ice and snow tires, or even performance winter tires, due to the harder compound they use to lock onto the studs and keep them in place.
These tires are dedicated winter tires but they are also a lot closer to all season tires, on the sliding scale, than studless ice and snow tires or performance winter tires.

Wow guys, great information. I really appreciate this.
I'll have her make the switch to performance snows for next winter. DriveHard -- I appreciate the insight regarding the square setup. Cool, I guess that solves that pretty much... not that there is anything wrong with her tires, but she is getting less than optimal performance due to them being aggressively snow-centric rather than having a good balance between asphalt and snow.

The non RFT version of the ultra grip gw3 seems to get good reviews. I agree I'm astonished that bmw sells such a poor winter tire as their "winter package". Very gentle acceleration in snow conditions in a straight line and and im drifting side to side close to cars in the lane next to me. I think there is a tradeoff though, in dry pavement these tires corner well have good rolling resistance, are quiet and generally have the good attributes of a summer tire performance wise. Personally I don't think winter is the time for high speed performance driving. I would much rather have the softer mushier continental extremewinter contact tires (I had these on my golf) for crappy winter weather. Sure they have more road noise, don't have as high a speed rating. On snow and ice though they performed great and I was able to zip around in horrible conditions like nothing else. |

I think if you live in an area that gets a decent amount of snow it is best to get a good quality snow tire instead of a performance snow, or studable. I have the Dunlop SP tires, and I don't like them at all, but before I have had and liked Nokian Hakapalita, Gislaved Nordfrost, and Michelin X-ice. The Nokian, and Michelin were on Mercedes C230 coupes, so very similar size, and weight to the 128i, and also rear wheel drive. The Gislaved are on my E320 so that is completely different, but all those three are great tires, and the difference in winter traction compared to performance winters is about as big as all seasons to performance winters. And with all three at speeds up to 130 KPH (80 MPH) they are nice and stable, you just can't push them too hard in the corners.

I had those exact tires/specs on my Z4 and I can confirm; they were sketchy as hell at highway speeds and under direction change input.
Highway speeds, my car would zig-zag back and forth, left to right in an uneasy manner. They also had horrible highway noise compared to Blizzaks I'd become used to in the past. When I got winters for the 1er, I avoided those Generals for this exact reason. A good winter (traction wise) tire for the price...but sketchy indeed.
