Tiptronic

As my father and I have been discussing the gearbox and the tiptronic mode, we have not come to an agreeable conclusion.
What we were discussing, was the gearbox, how it can be damaged and what is optimal for it.
So the question -

1) Personally this is what I wanted to know. Will upshifting early (1500-2000rpm) damage the gearbox or engine? Or is there no problem with it?
The reason I wanted to know is because most of the time I will try and get to 5th/6th as quickly as possible to save petrol (I do not floor it from low rpms). My father personally thinks that this will damage the gearbox in the long run, but I disagree.

2) What is the optimal rev to upshift/downshift while cruising on main roads? (60-80km/h)
Personally I like to shift at about 4000rpm if I'm not caring about fuel economy and for downshifting, I understand that the gearbox/clutch automatically rev matches for you so there shouldn't be a problem with that (I hope).

Discuss.

1) upshifting early will not hurt the engine or transmission. i wil say however if you are traveling long distances at lower RPMs ( <1K ) that might not be good for it as it needs to have a constant pressure level in the trans. The engine is fine either way. short shifting is common in racing when trying to save fuel for a race and is a preferred method of saving.

2) if you short shift between 1 - 2K RPM you are fine. get up to speed though and maintain around 2K RPMs to have proper fluid flowing for constant driving. lower RPMs you could see higher temps in the trans which could cause it to break down the fluid early. Normal shifting should happen anywhere from 2.5 to 6K depending on how spirited you drive.

Side note: If you bought the 1 to save fuel then why did you buy it? live a little and give it some RPMs. just be careful to not get a ticket or worse.
