Didn't see the link ... but auto-parking is not new. Toyota has it as an option on JDM Priuses for the last 1-2 years...

yeah i think toyota has something like this.
personally, if i was a car maker, i wouldn't offer this. if the technology screws up and you hit a car while parking, whose fault is it? the drivers? or BMWs? seems like this would open BMW up to a lot of lawsuits.

They demonstrated the technology in a X5 a number of years ago
Said it would be a number of years before they would think of releasing it to the market A lot of things are developed at least 5 years or more before you see it in production cars

oh wow. I never heard of this before. Im usually up to date on cars.. I guess not anymore.
that is an AWESOME feature. I hate downtown parking. That thing can be real handy. Although, I wouldn't be able to trust it.

I know toyota had a video out a few years about self park, including forward in, reverse in, and parallel parking.

Did you guys notice that the value of being a "skilled driver" is eroding fast with all these new technologies. Perfect parallel parking was one of my things when I lived New York City, I guess it doesnt count any more. |

i wonder if we can retrofit that option in our E90s once it comes out
i assume, however, some kind of automatic tranny would be required for this to work...

If this was to make it onto US market cars, I would expect to see the mother of all lawyer screens...

The problem with self parking is it doesn’t work in real world situations where you have inches to spare. They only work when you have a Hummer sized parking space to squeeze in your 3 series. Once someone parks too close front or behind these systems can't navigate their way in or out.
