I think it could work with manual, it would simply have a message on the screen which says "shift to reverse"... "shift to first" etc.

You would definitely need active steering though.

This is like the MB option on the new S-class that will basically drive for you (like a super active cruise control that will brake and reaccelerate).

IMHO, if you need such options you shouldn't be allowed to drive. Whats next? A blow up doll that pumps your gas for you (iPump)? A system that will steer for you (iSteer)? Telepathic window openers and ignition (iKnow)? A small elf that lives in your side mirrors and pays the toll at toll booths (iElf)?

I'd rather they invest engineering $$ on making cars with 300 HP and 50 MPG. Now thats an advancement, IMO.

I think I'll stick to parking it myself.

They should create similar systems, but not have it automatically do the parking, just guide you. It would be cheaper, and simpler.

Yeah, I have seen some pretty "creative" parallel parking in NY. Usually involves someone trying to get into a space that is the exact length of the car they are driving. Its possible if you hit the person in front of and behind you enough times. that bumper flex and suspension movement can give you some extra space!

Very cool.... but I want to see it work with:

a) A small spot
b) Traffic all around the car on a typical downtown street (i.e. better be careful not to stick the nose of the car into oncoming traffic when backing into the spot).

The continued R&D investment into driving automation is going to far. We're moving down a path leading to the Ultimate it-will-drive-for-you Machine.

Adaptive cruise control, adaptive steering, start-off assist, hill descent control? When the car takes over more and more of the primary control functions (go, stop, turn), then BMW is getting further away from their mission.

I do like much of the new technology, and especially those aimed at safety, improved performance/handling, and improved feul economy, but "convenience features" are getting more and more priority lately.

Can people just learn how to drive please...
Agreed, the last thing we need is an easy way out for people to park. People can't drive as it is!

*Sorry for bringing back an older thread* I doubt this will ever phase its way into production. If they do, it's going to be when you can push a button and cars with turn their wheels horizontally and go straight into the spot. Now that would be cool!
