I noticed in the thread on e90post that the front bumper was off during install. Is this a requirement to install the Helix intercooler?

No, it's not necessary to take off the bumper to install the helix intercooler. For the 1 series, you do need to trim a small amount of plastic near the edges of the intercooler, but it should be installed with the bumper on.
