this is a old post, just curious if the same method will work on a N55?

Yes, the N55 uses the same vacuum controlled flap in the exhaust.

ok, i've searched and searched, is there an image of how you ziptied the line?
Did you kink it first then zipped the kink or just zipped it tight enough to cut off the flow? Do you do this while the car is off or on? I want to do the Zip tie mod =)

I think you can do either.
I kinked and zip tied the kink so it would be easier to cut off if I wanted to. Don't think I'll be doing that |

Kink and zip tie. I'm not sure you could pinch the line hard enough just by placing a zip tie around the circumference.

Thanks figured it out when I got down there and actually took a look at it. A little bit of a distinct difference.

Took me 30 seconds with a zip tie under the car. No need to jack it up just poke your head under there.

Did the mod this morning. Used a 3/16" plug, 3/16" male to male connector, and 5/16" plug in the actuator. Tucked the vacuum line in one of the pockets on the inside of the bumper cover.
Dunno how people can't hear the difference. Sounds great, and I love the burble too!

That's why the original mod involves plugging a golf tee in the end of the tube: to prevent loss of vacuum. I doubt you'd notice anything in your radio though. That'd be really bizarre.

Yeah, I did not buy the radio thing when I read it in another thread; however, it seemed the volume went up & down slightly. But I had not eaten all day and combined with back meds I am amazed I did not hear other weird things.
Anyway, what I was getting at is I had the Berk Race cat-back exhaust installed yesterday and the tech had a problem getting the supplied screw in the tube so I wondered what symptoms I would get if the seal was not tight, or the screw came out. |

I think that all BMWs come with an adaptive volume control that adjusts the volume based on speed. As you go faster, the volume goes up. Whoever did the install might have adjusted this setting to "do you a favor". A louder exhaust can make it difficult to hear the stereo.

Also, I would get that vacuum tube plugged. You don't want crud getting sucked up in to your vacuum system. There are diaphragms and stuff that can be damaged by contaminants.

I'll have to drive the car again and listen closely...I am aware of the speed compensating volume but it still seemed to vary at constant speeds. But I guess I can rest assured the line is still plugged since there are no CELs or other symptons (so far) and the car sounds great with the Berk Race and BMS Intake.
