Limited Production or ???
Most of the articles I have seen about the 1M indicate very limited production - i.e. fewer than 2500 cars, with less than 1000 coming to the US. Note that with about 360 dealers, that is only 2-3 cars per dealer, which is very limited indeed.
However, then I saw this: http://jonsibal.com/blog/2010/12/spe...dition-bmw-1m/ Which seems to indicate BMW may have had a change of heart on limited production. I'm sure we'll know more when they announce at Detroit. |

I am not so sure this guy knows what he is talking about. He mentioned that BMW issues special editions at the end of their runs, citing the BMW E36 M3 LTW (lightweight), but this car was only produced in the FIRST year of the E36 M3 production run, not the last, they were all 1995 cars.

I agree that all the stuff about other models was pure speculation and BS. But this statement - attributed to some unnamed and tight-lipped BMW source - is the one that got my attention:
"BMW originally set to release the E82 1M Coupe as a limited edition model – about 2700 units. But due to positive response, BMW lifted the cap and was said to produce as many E82 1M Coupes as they can until production ends in Spring of 2012." |

the prod. capacity in the Leipzig plant. So one way or the other there will be limited offer of 1M's. Lets us supose 200 to 250 cars pe day divided by coupe;cabrio and 1M. So if they are going to make the 1M during aprox. 1 year then I think the production is limited. |

I've searched and searched but can't find anything definitive. Does anyone know if 2012 will be the end of this car? That seems like and terribly short production run. The reason I ask is that I took out a lease in 2010 that isn't up until 2013. If they end production in 2012 it seems highly unlikely there would be a new 1M in 2013 - which sucks as I really really want this to be my next (last?) car - ED.
I hope BMW doesn't limit the production run on this thing to a couple of short years. |

^ The reason you can't find an answer is because no one knows. Best guess is that 1 series production ends around late spring/early summer 2012, so the 1M won't go beyond that. But there is no definitive word from BMW. They're probably waiting to see how it sells. If it sells well, it may continue in production for 2-3 more years to fill the gap until the next M3 comes out. If sales are flat, they'll probably end production next year.

^ Could be. Or as someone else (either M3Adjuster or Dackelone) was saying, the Leipzig factory is only operating at about 70% capacity right now. They could up that to compensate for the added demand from the American market for the X1.

IMO, nobody knows, not even BMW. It may depend on the unique tooling required for the 1M and actual demand. I can't imagine BMW turning away sales of a production model if supply will keep up. Production rates at a factory are easy to adjust.

Today's press release says: "The 1 Series M Coupe will be available in limited quantity..." That's all I can tell.
Best regards, south

The press release says:
"... will be available in limited quantity as a 2011 model." How is that for clear as mud? No production figures and no mention of possible quantity as a 2012 model. In fact, why isn't it a 2012 model anyway? |

FWIW on the back of their Detroit 1M article, Inside Line quote less than 1000 units for the US market:

Here is my dilemma:
I want this car. However, I can be patient for it, and I absolutely do not want to pay any dealer premium. In fact, I would definitely do ED for this car, and expect a typical ED discount. I am not sure when would be the best time to order the car. Ideally, I could take ED delivery in Fall 2011 (before the weather turns bad in Germany) or Spring 2012 (again, when weather is agreeable for ED). I don't mind the wait. Gives me more time to sock away the down payment. However I don't want to get caught in a trap of "oh there's a 12 month waiting list" and that accounts for all production through 20xx, and I end up empty handed. |
