Bypassing Clutch Switch?
Hey guys, I want to bypass the clutch pedal switch that needs to be engaged for the car to start. I searched around before making this thread but couldn't find anything specific. I currently have 5 shims on my BMS clutch stop and still have dead travel in my pedal, I want to completely eliminate it by adding more shims but as it is my car is very hard to start unless I really stomp down on the clutch pedal to get the switch to engage, and its pretty embarrassing when it doesn't on the first attempt lol. How can I bypass the switch so I won't have to push down the clutch to start my car anymore? Thanks!

Are you sure you aren't low on clutch/brake fluid? check your brake fluid level..
maybe you have air in the system? Please bleed your clutch! I'm also assuming you are refering to an aftermarket clutch stop, the clutch will not engage if you place too many shims on it! Is the pedal mushy?? Last edited by tremere613; 12-11-2014 at 01:20 PM.. |

Yes.. I have an aftermarket BMS clutch stop lol. I mentioned in my post that I have 5 shims on it and that's why its hard to engage the clutch switch and start the car. I want to add more shims but must bypass the switch as the car will be impossible to start with even one more shim added :/
But you bring up good points too, I've seen other people who put the BMS clutch stop say they had the dead travel completely eliminated with just 3 shims. I was starting to think maybe my pedal was out of adjustment, I know you originally brought them up as causes for the car not starting but could low fluid or air also cause the extra dead pedal travel? Air in the system will make the pedal feel spongy/no spring to it...
Highly recommend a bleeding of the system... Do not leave 5 shims in!! Safety issue if you aren't engaging the clutch....

I'm afraid I may be confusing you... my issue isn't with my clutch not engaging (like i said there's still plenty of dead travel in the pedal), it is with the clutch switch. It is the safety switch that gets engaged by pressing in the clutch pedal when starting the car, the car wont turn over without it engaged and since my pedal not going down as far due to my BMS clutch stop its not being engaged without a hard stomp. Its only a issue when you are starting the car. My clutch pedal itself is very springy and pops and my clutch engages and disengages fine...that is not the issue i am asking about.

Looking at the diagrams (realoem), I'm thinking your part might be 61319231129. There is only one, not separate switches for cruise and start... and so I'm wondering if it's possible to easily disable what you seek (and I might agree with you, I lived without this kind of "safety" feature for 35yrs, this is not something I need).

The clutch switch likely closes when you depress the clutch. With an ohm meter you can disconnect the connector, depress the clutch and determine if there is continuity across the switch pins when the clutch is the depressed. If so, you can short the wire harness connecter so the car always thinks the clutch is depressed to enable engine start. Of course you're cruise control won't work...

Ah I see, yeah definitely want to keep my cruise control so looks like bypassing is a no go. Another possible solution would be to also add a bump spacer to the end of the clutch switch so that it engages earlier, but looking at pics of it I cant really tell how it operates.
tremere613 that diagram you posted what is the context, is that the assembly just above the clutch pedal? I'm trying to find the switch to see how it operates and can possibly attach a bump spacer to it. BTW in case anyone was wondering/curious here's a pic of my 'custom' BMS clutch stop Last edited by BigRussia; 12-12-2014 at 04:50 PM.. |

It is the diagram for the part the last poster was referring to...
Attaching some kind of stopper/extending the switch would help you solve your "issue" I am still concerned that you will not be 100% engaging the clutch .. The switch is their for a reason...
