Could be the worse car ever in the snow....
Gotta say it....
Ok, I know the 135 is a sports car, it wasn't made for the snow, why am I driving it in the snow, and so on.... BUT COME ON! I got stuck in 1/4 inch of snow, stock tires, on FLAT GROUND! (snowed on the way to work in Portland, Or) ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? My father's Corvette was better in the snow! Wouldn't trade the car for anything - except my X3 when it snows, which by the way (with snow tires) is great in the snow. Don't bother flaming me - I know...... |

Dude the 128 rocks in the snow. It's balanced and stable in turns on power. And when you are alone you can flick it real nice. The Stock tires are not for snow.

Remember trying to play foot hockey back in the day in the winter and the only hockey ball anyone had was a red summer one..
yeah well remember how that thing turned into a bouncy rock that no one could control... that is the stock 135i tires in the snow....

Who would ever drive summers in the snow let alone in the winter in an area that gets near freezing? Talk about recipe for disaster. There's a reason they call them summers.

Ha! Not even close to the worst car in the snow. Try a '64 Corvair.
Touch the gas and it spins. Hit the brakes and it spins. Get out to try and catch your breath and accidentally lean against the car and it spins. Of course, the decade-plus old bald tires might have had something to do with it...

Dude understand what you're driving on. You do NOT have all-season tires. If you get extended periods of cold winter weather then you either need different tires or a different car with different tires. I have a set of Dunlop Winter Sport 3ds on and the car is fabulous in the snow.

With summer tires my former Porsche 993 couldn't get out of our relatively flat barnyard in a quarter-inch of snow or even on icy grass, rear weight bias and all. My former '04 MINI Cooper S with summers, ditto, even with all that front weight bias on a front-drive car. The 135 with Dunlop 3Ds came out of there yesterday through four inches of snow without a moment's hesitation. Until things get really hairy and there is lots of blown snow with long drifts, I prefer the winter handling of this car on snows to that of my Audi S4 Avant on AS Michelins. Dedicated snows do wonders for the 135. On summers, it justifies the old BMW saw: it'll skid if someone a mile away clicks ice cubes in a glass.

I drove a 135 loaner with summer tires. It was icy and snowy in Ohio… probably 2-3 inches of snow.
It was rough, but it was okay. You just had to be careful. My 128 with snow tires, however, is like a tank. It's amazing.

Any car on summer performance tires in winter is going to be lousy. Any car on summer performance run-flats is going to be even worse. RWD, FWD, AWD, or 4x4...it won't matter. Some may get going better than others, but none will stop or turn.
So, it's not the car...it's the tires, and how you, as a driver, are able to cope with your equipment and conditions. Obviously, neither came out well. But....put the 1-series (or any other car) on proper tires for the season, and look out. DSC off (DTC on) and I can out-accelerate most SUVs & 4x4s away from red-lights -- some of those drivers around here also go to winters in winter. Granted, your location in Portland, OR, would lead you to believe that there is never a need for winter tires...but you're not even on all-season tires, which may help too. I stress the may, as all-season tires already start to loose grip at +7C (45F) -- this is the temperature threshold that rubber industries and tire companies have published, not mine (I've got a pamphlet from Michelin right here on my desk). Summer performance tires (as in what's on your BMW) are going to rocks by +5C (41F)...adding in the likely wet snow you were receiving and that a recipe for disaster.

I have complained much about my 135i. But on this topic, the OP is wrong.
I have Dunlop WinterSport M3's on it from the TireRack and the car is actually impressive in the snow and slipperty conditions. Not as good as my 2006 STi with all-seasons, but darn close. Get some appropriate tires and some practice before you kill yourself or worse, someone else! |

Only thing bad here is wrong tires for the conditions, and a bad driver... My car works GREAT here in Norway in the winter time.
