How do the automatic high beams work??
Does anyone know the mechanics/science behind these? I have been trying to figure it out for some time with no luck.
I actually find the system to be pretty impressive. I can be driving down a road with street lights and lights on houses and the high beams will flick on. The second a car's headlight or even tail light comes into view they flick off. It's pretty friggin neat!

All I know is that there is a front facing camera inside of the rear view mirror where the rain sensor is. That camera detects on-coming cars or cars in front of it. Also GPS info is used (uncertain though) to detect if it's on city street or rural road.

Great info though guys thanks a lot! Pretty neat that the camera is able to figure all this out.

The new HBA with Active LED is really a smart and helpful system. Being an engineer and knowing planned obsolescence, my only concern would be a long term worry about life of the active components and cost of repair/replacement.

Yeah... the new Active LED lights are really cool. They even work better in real life than what's shown on that 2nd video. I was totally blown away two years ago when a friend of mine took me out at night in a Werkstestwagen(Zebra). Too bad the US doesn't allow full LED's with HBA. But you can code a US spec car(3er/5er/6er/7er) to EU specs - then you have the same setup. I had my US spec 135i coded to the EU specs. Wider spread of low beams at low speeds, then the headlights go to pencil beams. Also more light output on highbeams. The EU AHL2 coding is really cool. AHL2 EU headlight Coding... http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=843765

I don't think so. I think you need the BMW coding sw to do it. EVen over here... only a few SW coders know how to do it.
