Expectation Management
Is it me, or has there been a shift in all of the news about this car? In the months leading up to renders and revealing of the 1M Coupe, the news was about excitement and poise, about about featured content of the car to differentiate it from the 135i and make it a true //M car. All about what is possible with //M engineering to improve the product. Now the news and rumors after last weeks reveal seems to be more focused on what WILL NOT be included in the car. The current hit list are N54 engine instead of modified N55 engine, M6 transmission only, limited production (2000 units worldwide like a MINI JCW GP??), limited colors, and now limited personalization and carbon fiber. I remember the early news and see what is being rumored now, and see expectation management ... or reasons why this new //M car will not be as exclusive as others.... I understand the desire to keep production cost low, and to provide a niche vehicle to bring new blood to the brand. I hope the car can meet the hype, or disappointment will reign supreme!!

It does look as though everything's being toned down like you say. Maybe the whole concept is wrong.
Maybe cheap and M car shouldn't go together after-all. I'd happily pay extra to have a cf roof for example. Holding judgment until release - but I'm disappointed today with the carbon fiber speculation. That was a crux for me for sure - always wanted one of those.

I think that we will see all of the things that were originally mentioned for the 1M, but in the NEXT generation.
As many people have said, this generation of the 1M was thrown together quickly, and the final result is going to be reflective of that fact..... This is a last ditch effort to make some more money off the E82 platform....

My bet is that this was a goal of the E82 1M that won't be realized until the F20 1M.....

I really want this car to succeed, but am beginning to question Dr Kay's statement that this is a real M-- I guess that's why he said so many times during his speech last week so that people would believe him. Well, am gonna keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best, but am going to test drive the 335is and M3 this week just to see if this car is really worth wating for

Just wait till they try to manage HPFP failures on 1Ms. This could blow up in the worst way for BMW (and deservedly so) since they're going the quick and dirty route.

If they cant see that people want a smaller version of the m3 that leans toward more race and less gadgets and luxury then they are not as smart as i think they are. Things need to evolve and a smaller lighter car should be quicker than the m3. The new 1m should be the old m3 and so on up the M ladder.

You know what, I think Porsche is a stupid company for not selling the Cayman for $30,000. I mean, can't they see that people want that?

I will be the first to admit that I want his car to succeed and meet my expectations. I want this car to be as special as Dr Seglar claims that it is. I am looking forward to driving one to justify the wait and expense for my next car. If it is too exclusive or sold out, I have many options to keep me entertained!

There are quite a bit of preowned cayman for 30,000 and I don't see them flying off the shelve. Porsche like to control volume to maintain price point of its vehicle, even the preowned, to maintain its brand. If they flood the market with 30,000 Caymans that will drive secondary (preowned) to 15,000 in 4-5 years which can be damaging to a company that supposedly sells high-end cars.

2) I thought my sarcasm was quite clear. I don't really expect Porsche to sell brand new Caymans for $30,000. Just like I don't expect BMW to sell a smaller, lighter, and faster version of the M3, with all of the M3's features (including CF roof) for cheaper than an M3.
