How to open trunk after disconnecting battery leads
How do you open the trunk if I accidentally closed the trunk after I disconnected the battery terminals? I was removing the rear seats when I accidentally closed the trunk after disconnecting the battery terminals. I have access to the inside of the car, but I don't have access to the trunk. I tried jump starting the car, but could not get the car to start nor the trunk to open.
Any guidance anyone can give is appreciated. I'm trying to get this done this weekend. Thanks, Pete Last edited by Lone Patrone; 02-11-2017 at 05:07 PM.. |

I Got It Open. Thank You To Xjan For The Advice About Removing The Passenger Side Rear Speaker And Then Feeling Around For The Cable That Connects To The Latch In The Trunk. Once You Find The Cable You Will Need A Pair Of Long Pliers To Grab The Cable And Pull It With Enough Force To Pop The Rear Seat Latch And Then You're In. I Tried Everything Before This. I Spent Three Hours Looking For A Solution Before Coming Across Xjan's Solution.
Thank You Xjan. Never Disconnect The Positive Lead On The Battery If There Is A Chance You Will Close The Trunk. Only Disconnect The Negative Lead. Bmw Please Be Advised That Your Cost Cutting Lead To This Issue. Put A Manual Key Hole Trunk Release Back On The Trunk. This Is Border Line Dangerous And Just Silly. |

No, 2010s don't have trunk keyholes. However, they do have driver door keyholes so the method I mentioned works flawlessly as long as you can connect your front leads to a power source.

In my case, there's a child seat fastener located between two back seats, you remove the foam and then remove the hard plastic box that held by button and then you can move your hand around and unlatch the back seats if you'd like or release the emergency handle it's green color and It's a cable so not electronic

I think I went through this a couple times but I have it down now.
First item is put a towel covering the trunk lock so it does not lock. But if you get locked out (I did). No Key access for the trunk. Connect the engine bay positive and negative to another 12 volt source and that would allow you to open the trunk. Pics attached. Nick PS: You can trickle charge from the posts in the engine bay. (I do) I would not jump the car from the posts in the engine bay. (never had to) |

I always put my seats down when working on a job with the battery disconnected. That way if the trunk gets closed, I can just climb in and reconnect it. Have had several helpful people close the trunk on me thinking they were being nice over the years.

Roll the lock latch using a pen or small key or small screwdriver. Also works for programming, coding, flashing - roll the lock on the driver door before turning on the ignition.
Just dont forget to 'open' the door/boot before you slam the lock against the striker! |

This. Takes 2 seconds to pop the seats and make a definite way to get the truck reopened.

Even if you just give the release lever a tug to unlatch the seat before hand. 10 seconds and it saved a lot of hassle

My car lost power last night....just dead? Couldn't access boot to get my work stuff out..no keyhole on my 125i e82 coupe, its electric access only...wtf!!
Spent most of today trying to get in while waiting for battery to charge...(20hrs later)..Couldn't Jumpstart it no matter how much I tried..full battery did nothing??? Rear seats don't have release button in the cabin? Not even on the seats somewhere.. So I..... 1/ removed driver side rear shelf speaker, tore through the foam layer found the rear seat release cable and maneuvered it to release the seat...reached in to the boot and opened the other half of the rear seats (60/40 split seats)..... 2/ I then climbed into the boot and because there is no trunk release cable visible in this particular bmw????....I removed the trunk lid liner..... found the trunk release cable and opened the boot.....(it was under the trunk lid cover passenger side...taped to the trunk lid??? Problem was a loose terminal on the battery module....thats why battery would charge but the car could not receive power even though its actually connected.... |
