Track Day VIR 11/14-11/15
Hi all,
Taking my 1M to VIR 11/15 to run the Grand Course with track daze. They are also doing 11/14 the full course. Anyone else going or want to go. Looks fun! Hopefully weather will hold out. J |

Preparing for VIR
Spent a day at my shop today prepping the cars for track day. Installed my apex wheels and Hankook rs3 tires from HP autowerks and my cool carbon pads from bavarian autosport. All works great together. Some mild rubbing of the tires on the front inner fender near lock but no other problem. Used a 3mm spacer but may try eliminating this to see if it helps rubbing.
Also did front brakes on my friends e36 m3 with coo carbons and new rotors and did pads on another friend's hyundai genesis coupe with the brembo brakes. Good day now we are ready for VIR Tuesday: Hyundai went first on the lift. We found out to our surprise pads were wasted. No performance pads available in town so had to hit the stealer up for pads. They are official brembo pads and the front set cost like $300 ouch. Glad they were not mine ;-) Then the e36 M3 goes up. Its front brakes were wasted so it got new rotors and cool carbon pads from bavarian autosport. I have not heard a lot about these pads but a long time m3 guy at Carolina motorsports park was raving about them for street/track use so we are trying them. My pads front and rear and m3's front pads and rotors: Now it is my turn so 1M goes up on the lift: Comparo of stock front tire to 265 Hankook tire: Love these massive front brakes 3mm spacer for front. Not sure if it is helping or hurting Outside after pad bed in |

Are you taking all three cars?
I was hoping to instruct on Tuesday but haven't signed up, mainly because my dang 1M is STILL not here! BMW system showed re-delivery on this past Tuesday but still no car. I guess I could take Boss or even Spec E30 but it seemed like it would be easiest to drive 1M and use it. One question, why the major investment in track stuff for 1M? Are both the other cars yours? We drove 1M on Nurburgring and honestly, I wouldn't want to make it more "tracky" for fear of wrecking it. What's your plan? |

Only the 1M is mine. 1995 e36 M3 belongs to my friend, Lane, and Genesis Coupe to another friend ,Ryan...
1M will see light track duty (3-4 track days a year). I am building a dedicated track day car now. (1969 Alfa GTV). So if I ever finish that 1M will see less track I am sure. J |

i have the same spacers on the front, just to help prevent it from rubbing on the inside. My other concern was the fender rubbing on the tires when compressed (outside) and i kept off the curbs (i'm a curb jumper)
Keep us posted on how it performs. have fun! |

Just a word to the wise about those Cool Carbon pads.
My intermediate student in 135i was running them this past weekend at Summit Point and -- once I got him braking hard -- experienced significant fade. Calipers/rotors on 1M are, of course, different, so YMMV but I was not impressed by the pad. Neil P.S. I had a '71 GTV 1750 and regret having sold it! |

I thought someone mentioned that they were running Hawk, was it you Neil? I used to use them all the time, and they have no fade what-so-ever.

If you remove the spacers will you be able to get the wheel inside the fender? I'm concerned under full load the fender lip might hit the tire. If that happens you could end up rippling the fender. If it were me I'd remove the spacer and not turn the wheel to full lock. Its not like your ever going to do that on track anyway, and if you do who cares.
If its rubbing inside rear then it will not be a problem under load. If its inside front you'll need to see what happens on track when the suspension's compressed going into a turn. |

Great day today. Tires worked very well and brakes were awesome. Noticed just the smallest bit of fade braking into turn one on my last session out but with a little more pressure no problem Cool Carbons are probably fine for someone at my level (beginner-early intermediate) but will try something more serious once these are gone.
Track Daze group was great and ran a tight ship. No issues at all. And the Grand Course East is amazing. You should definitely run it if given the opportunity. It is quite demanding though. Will try to get some pics and video up in the next couple days. Of a side note Randy Propst was there. Everyone kept commenting "hey that guy over there hates your car" in reference to him. He never said anything to me but I did notice him complimenting various mustangs and corvettes ;-) This car continues to impress me and my instructor was very impressed with it. We went much faster into and out of turns than he expected we would be able to. J |
