128i Weight

So it's not really relevant to anyone with different options & mods than I, but for what it's worth to anyone I had my car weighed today. Gas was about 5/8 of a tank and it came out to 3120 lbs. I easily take out 20 lbs. of stuff for autocross (car seat & tools), so I figure I'm running at 3100 lbs. or less for events. Just an FYI. I've always been curious how much below the "official" figure of 3252 lbs. I was.

Cool! Where on earth did they get the official weight anyway?

From the brochure & website. Presumably they weighed a car with sunroof, electric seats, etc. Also, I shaved a lot of weight by switching out of OEM wheels.

That makes sense. I have to get on replacing the OE 263s I have haha. Those things weighed a ton when I was taking them off for the winter.

Anyway, I can't lose much weight because it's a convertible and thus weighs about 100lbs more than the coupe.

I love the weight of these....only 2 power window motors...mine has manual sport seats, no seat motors, no sunroof...and I saved over 30 lbs with new wheels and no runflats...and another 20 lbs or so dumping the mostly-useless heavy muffler. The aluminum BMW/Brembo calipers probably dumped another 15 lbs....the rotors are bigger but have aluminum hubs. Incredible handling, steering that other manufacturers only wish they could duplicate, and that amazing 3 liter 6 cylinder jewel; all sitting in a compact body that's shorter than my wife's Civic. The least expensive car BMW makes, is actually the real BMW....

Fantastic. I'm pretty sure I should be just below 3100.

It's quite interesting to get that done. How did you weigh the car?

The reason I ask is that things like truck scales aren't too accurate, whereas something like a set of Longacre racing scales & side-sliders (to minimize suspension binding) are a lot better.

Thanks.

Karl.

Just an FYI that I had a quick look at the curb weights listed in my '08 owner's manual.

It lists a 242 lb difference between the 128i Coupe and Convertible.

Karl.
