Charging Malfunction and Power Steering Loss

I got in my '09 135i earlier to come home after the vehicle was parked for about an hour. As I drove about 3 minutes down the road, all of a sudden the message flashed on top of my screen stating "Charging Malfunction". The small info panel next to the speedo was flashing a picture of a battery. Then as I went to make a turn I realized that my power steering had completely cut out.

I tried searching with no luck. Has anyone else ran into this issue before? I would like to address it if possible on my own, otherwise I will have to schedule time to take into the dealer.
