Exclamation Recently purchased 130i, questions for other owners

Hi Guys,

New to this site and looking for some help. Loving the 130i as I was previously a Peugeot owner, so a nice step up. A few questions for other 130 owners...

Servicing in Sydney: I tend not to use Dealership serving and enjoy the more personalised service I get from Specialist workshops. I also enjoy working with the detail in terms of what was done. What would you guys recommend?

Premium Fuel: Any preferences out there of which fuel works best for performance and economy. E.g. on my old 306Gti BP Ultimate felt quite nice, and Shell V-power not so good.

Tyre Preference: Have been a long time Michelin fan, what tyres out there work best with the 18in wheels? I'm after low noise, longevity, and decent grip.

Your help would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks
K

Hi Kipek and welcome!

Servicing - what area of Sydney are you looking at? My experience with an independent BMW specialist has been great, particularly if you're interested in getting the job done right.

Fuel - Shell V-Power and BP Ultimate 98 preferred, however I've not noted any issues with Mobil 98 or Vortex 98. In my case, choice is typically limited by geographic availability. Seems to run ok on 95 when 98 is unavailable.

Tyres - the big question here is RFT or not. There's a lot of discussion on this forum and others about RFTs - for me, RFTs are the better allround choice. As you start to look into RFTs, you'll discover that your choices are somewhat limited by wheel size and manufacturer. It'll likely be Bridgestone, Pirelli or Conti. Michelin have a very limited range of RFTs, which at last check are 911 sizes, not 130i sized I can't specifically comment on the 18" options as I'm running 17". Either way, have a look at the threads here about Tirerack, as you'll be gouged locally for RFTs.

Moving away from RFTs will open up your choices significantly, but there's other compromises, but they may not be significant for your situation (eg no other drivers of the car, availability of jack/repair kit/spare).

Daniel.

Hi K, welcome to the forum and congratulations on the new car - really is great choice, mine has served me well and still puts a smile on my face!

Servicing in Sydney: No idea. The Sydney guys can help with this.

Premium Fuel: I always do RON98. BP Ultimate is the only choice here, so I always stick to that.

Tyre Preference: I run Michelin Pilot Sport 2s at 225/35/18 all around. This setup has been great for me and has been a night and day difference from the much loathed RFTs. Grip, longevity and road noise have been excellent - will continue with Michelin for all my cars unless something better comes along. I got them from tirerack.com which I can't recommend highly enough. Was half the price of what I was quoted locally.

Jack and such is an issue. I make do with a compressor and goo can which I got from Ford and seems to be doing the job great. Cost about $150 all up I think.

Hope this helps mate. Please feel free to ask if you need any more info. Really is a great bunch here.

225/40/18 all round served me well. I ditched the RFT's and ran the risk of a flat tyre, like alik01. What tyres do you have on them now?

The new michelin PSS's (Pilot Super Sports) are out on tirerack.com, worth a look for sure. They are supposed to be better all around than the ps2's and cheaper.

I always put Shell V-Power in my car but I recently had a chat to a friend to drives the big fuel trucks for Caltex and he said that BP and Caltex is good but he wouldnt trust shells V-Power. So today I put Caltex Vortex 98 into my car for the first time in a while and I must say it does feel good although it could all be in my head.
