Accessory power plugs power complaint
So I got an XM radio in FLA last week, and I'm enjoying it to no end.
Except it only runs when the engine is ON. Do you iPod people suffer this too? The regular radio works in Acces. mode, but the XM turns off, so any programming that I will eventually do will have to be while burning pricey 94 octane fuel. Is there any cure for this??

my car was built in October....I would have thought I was as up to date as possible. I'll ask my dealer if this is the case.

Stew...
Don't know if there is a workaround, but I installed my iPod today and was pleased to find this "feature". In my last car (GM ) I hated having to always power-down the iPod evertime I left the car. |

All I can think of is to take it to BMW and have them hardwire it with the other accessories. Exccept then I'd need another cradle for my other cars etc...what an annoyance.

it should stay on if you leave the car in the ON/run position rather than the accesory position (like how you'd close the sunroof with the engine off)
yeah, all the power outlets to cut out when you turn the car off and into accesory mode |

Stew - That is BMW punishing you for having XM. Surely you can see that they have a marketing arrangement with Sirius! But to answer your question, I'm pretty sure my iPod stays on when the engine is off, in fact I know it does. But I'm not relying on the power supply for it, just the accessory jack.

As soon as I hit the Stop button it dies, Ward.
And Zep, as you may recall, I had ordered the Sirius prewire, but the goddamn factory monkeys forgot to do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oooooh, I forgot about that. You should have refused the car (I would have). Not so easy to do after such a long wait, but settling for less than you ordered sucks. Someone probably forgot to put it on the sheet.

I gotcha, it's a pain, but you'll have to press the start/stop with no feet on the pedals to cycle back to the on position (as long as no pedals are pressed the car won't start) Just make sure you're not running the fan or AC as you'll drain the battery really fast. it will die when you shut the car down, you've got to hit start stop to bring it back to life (don't get me wrong, my suggestion is a pain too, but will make the 12V hot again) |

The pre-wiring for satellite radio should be a standard install anyway. Who's the dipshit that figured they should charge $75 for the privilege of later paying $600 for the radio? Hide the cost in the base price and put the damned wires in.

Yah...well, there wasn't a chance in hell that I wasn't going to take the car because of the lack of the prewire, especially after all my angst over the "no-wood" scam. Now had they forgotten the Step, or the XI, well, that woulda been fighting issues. I knew from this board that the BMW Sirius box was very expensive, and I had read that it wasn't GREAT in its performance. So having a Delphi Sky2go on the seat next to me is fine. They sell a little remote with it. I'm usually in the car alone, so I don't care that it is loose. This way I can switch it to my X5 or Jimmy when necessary. And if I had taken the BMW Sirius option, I would have probably had to take the Canadian Sirius, which I really did not want.

You simply need to find unswitched power for the receiver. The lead tech at the dealership should be happy to identify a wire that you can tap in a fairly convenient location.

I tried the Ward solution, and indeed, accessory power is available, but the xenons must be shut down, as well as any other power sucking accessory like AC etc.

There's a Canadian Sirius? What's the difference, do they insert the word "eh" at the end of everything?

You iPod people are forgetting that when you switch off the socket, it just stops charging the iPod, it still continues to run on it's batteries. This is painful because I have to remember to open the console and pause it.
I can't wait for BMW to get their act together and produce a properly integrated iPod interface with the iDrive...

Yeah, I am thinking of getting one of these, because otherwise it is a PITA... been looking at the DIY forum for pulling one of those apart and making it black to suit the interior.

So I put the Xm in the X5 for a couple of days...the exact opposite happens. When I turn off the ignition and leave the car the XM stays on !! So I guess I prefer the E90 solution, since I have figured out my stations and my programming etc....

I must say that the power cycling using the start button irritates me a little (not to the point of disliking the car tho). It's the same thing with any elect. For example, I get in the garage, press the start button to stop the car. The radio still plays, but the garage door remote does not anymore. You need to press the start button twice (once to shut it off completely and once to wkae it up again) so you can use the damn remote. With a traditional key, it's just a matter of putting the key in the right position and voila !!
I'm still not convince of the usefullness of the start button (without the comfort access must I precise). But, Stew, what was the original point of your question ? Were you expecting to listen to the radio right after closing the ignition ? If so, indeed the only way is to power cycle like ward mentioned.

Yeah, I thought of that after I made my other post. I forget to turn off the iPod half the time. One thing I have noticed, is that if you are listening to a playlist, the iPod will shut off after the playlist is over (maybe a minute or two later). I try to make playlists that are approximately as long as my commute. Sorry for being and taking this down the iPod path..
