Wind deflector worthwhile?
Hello! This is my first time posting. I'm about to lease my first BMW - so I'm new all around I've been reading 1Addicts for the past couple of weeks nearly 2 to 3 hours a day soaking it all in!
I'm picking up my new '08 135 'vert this week and while the car is pretty well loaded, I'm wondering if I should go ahead and get some more accessories. What do think about the wind deflector? I've searched the forum and haven't seen any reviews on the wind deflector for the convertible - does it really work? Is it easily removed once installed? I occassionally take my kids places and would need to get them in and out of the back seat without much trouble - is it the type that pops in and can fold up to place in the trunk? Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions- Jason

It just pops in - no tools needed.
I bought my 'vert in November and can count on one hand the number of days I could take the top down () but so for I don't see the need for it personally. But then I don't mind the wind. Also, the price for the deflector is outrageous imho. |

I got my vert in late June and was able to drive it all summer with the top down. I purchased a wind deflector from Dan at United and it arrived before my car did so I've been able to use it since day one.
If you want to drive the car during the early spring or late fall you will probably want a wind deflector as the cold air buffeting you from behind is brutal. I found I drove it until October with the top down because of the wind deflector.

We had one on our old E46 330Ci and it was excellent.
The difference with it up or down is huge. Car looks much cooler cruising around with it down and the windows down, but at higher speeds e.g. 50-60mph+ it is excellent with the windows up.

RE: wind deflector
Thanks for the helpful feedback! I think I'll go ahead and get one - let's hope Spring is coming sooner than later.
Best, Jason

Make sure you shop around. The dealer pricing, depending on the dealer, can be out of whack. Go to the Dan @ United website and see what it costs their first.

welcome and congrats on the 135i vert. good choice.
Here is a good thread on the wind deflector. Also lists some good places to buy one for a good price. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=211286 |

Thanks for the help! Sounds like the deflector would be good to have on a longer highway trip to be sure.

Nothing wrong with getting one, but I really don't see the need. We did an ED on a 335 convertible last summer. Had the car in Europe for 5 weeks and never felt like we needed the wind deflector. Cruising at speeds up to 80 mph everything was fine, even for my wife. Above that, up to about 100 mph we felt we needed the windows up. At 100 + it was more comfortable to put the top up. So, for us, if we regularly cruised above 80 mph I guess I might consider a wind screen. But, in the States that is not an issue.

We have one of these on our E36 vert. IT is a must have option, as even in 95 it was designed so well that you couldn't imagine life without it. I'm sure they're even nicer now.

I was told by Dan @ United that the pricing has gone up.
Now ~$500 USD (FYI, >$640 CDN!). I searched e-bay and found some pricing around $350. I found the seller and called the dealership he worked at to make sure he was legit. Steve @ Cain BMW who lists on e-bay sold me 'the last one' at the old pricing and he did confirm that they had gone up to $485 inc. shipping. After a quick highway trip ~100 mph before and after purchase, I noticed a significant difference with wind noise and wind buffeting in the cabin. It's easy to test out because you can fold it down whilst you are driving. I'm looking forward to testing it out in the colder weather. I did notice at higher speeds that it shakes a bit since it only has one pivotal point that keeps it secure. So, I would notice something catching my attention in my rear view mirror only to realize it was the wind screen moving a bit. Too bad that the pricing has gone up. Oh, I would have returned mine as defective if I hadn't have read this post: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...=211286&page=4 (Shout-out to Carnut!) |
