Hole in Wheel FFS

Went for a drive yesterday arvo and tyre pressure light came on so stopped and using my BMW compressor pumped it back up. But alas it kept going down so took it to the local tyre place this morning and found I have a hole in my wheel (centre area behind spokes).

So now it is at BMW and on Monday they will check it out and decide if its warranty or $800

On Thursday morning I heard a big bang driving down Southern Cross Drive (just before the Supacentre) so i am assuming that was it - potehole or something....

Eek $800, maybe you should change from rft and buy a set of 4 non rft tyres.

Sorry to hear the bad news.

That's weird. Is it a hole or more of a crack? If it is a hole I would surmise that the wheel was badly forged and there is a weak spot. If it is a crack, could be the same reason, or the wheel could be sound and it just took a BIG hit.

It looked like a crack which has been pushed out a little - sort of like the mouth of a volcano - if that makes sense.

Hoping it is warranty but they want to see if anything is is inside the wheel.

Sounds like a weak spot that gave way - a warranty issue I reckon.

So just heard back from the dealer and they say the tyre place who fitted the non run flats incorrectly removed the tyres and therefore damaged the rim.... So rang the tyre guy and he denies everything..

Someone is lying to me and most likely it will be me who will be paying for all this..

Any advise???

So Tyre guy reckons its a pothole....

BMW say its 90% tyre removal equipment that caused it and highly recommend removing all tyres to inspect the other rims which I have agreed to.

BMW recommend taking the rim to motor trade board for them to look at after.

That looks like one very major ding that in my mind can only be done with the tyre off.

Some good news, rang my insurance company and they will follow it up - dealer has also agreed to do a written report as to what they believe caused the damage...

I was getting new rubber put onto my 19's the other day and my mate showed me how hard it is to put new rubber on large diameter rims...especially more so with tyres that have harder sidewalls.

The care that he took to remove the old and put on the new rubber was with surgeon like precision..

The big scratch that I see on yours looks like it was done with the tool that they use to pry the bead off the rim.. it is _very_ easy to damage a rim in the hands of an unexperienced fitter.

(I also had to get a new driver's side rear rim as it had a buckle on the inside edge, causing a slight vibration between 100-100km/h, most annoying!!) Whilst I was there I got some Yokohama Advans fitted all round.

Was on my way to Bunnings to buy materials to build a BBQ surround/shelf/storage & thought I'd drop into the tyre place to get an alignment/balance, walked out a few hours later $2000 poorer - got new CSL rim and 4 tyres couriered within the hour

Gumball - good to see your dealer is sticking up for you.

All you have to do is present the facts - no tyre damage but rim damage and BMW say it is most probably tyre removal technique.

Just say that unless they offer replacement, you'll go to Dept. Fair Trade with BMW's advice/letter.

Just a heads up on this, BMW has had substantial issues with the quality of their 19" rims cracking. So much so that it made prime time news in the UK & has lead to BMW pulling all 19" rims from sale as an option in the UK until further investigations have been carried out.

There was a case of another australian member who had this issue over at e90 post who used some of the UK info & was successful in having the rim replaced under good will. I suggest you have a look into this approach as well.
