BMW New Zealand has no active steering on 1 series?
So I call a BMW dealer today to spec up a new 2011 135i
And she tells me active steering isn't an option.......... Um wtf? Australia has it. NZ can get it. So why are they leaving it out? |

Why would you want it anyway? Waste of money.

that's probably true and i've never tried it so i can't really say. it's an expensive option... 3k before luxury tax. do you really need it? i mean, it's designed to help you steer in tight spaces as you need to turn the wheel less. you should look at some other options, comfort access, pro nav, sunroof etc. the only 1 i regret not getting is high-beam assist which i was able to try out on a z4 that i was loaned for the weekend. anyways, there are many of us who really don't like that option and whether you like it or not, it could affect your resale. a lot of people will turn down a car because of this option, it's kind of like manual drivers who only look for manual cars.

I see what you mean.
Though I test drove the 135i and I'm certain it had active steering because when i endedup in a deadend street and had to turn around, I was amazed at how little i had to turn the wheel and how easily the car did a complete u-turn in the narrow street. So I guess since then I've been set on it.. Personally the options which I am looking for are comfort access, hifi sound system, active steering, automatic transmission Wish I had the money to go for some of the other options you mentioned but yeah.. |

I have driven a 530i with active steering and its amazing at the ease of turning in a tight carpark with such a big car.. BUT on the 1er as others have said, it would be true waste of money as there are other options where the money could be well spent..

If I am in NZ I would spend the money on adaptive headlights first - the one I regraded is the external mirror pack which includes heated mirrors, which I would say you would need that in NZ?

i spoke to BMW nz btw, they said they can probably get active steering (@ about $3000NZD), they just didnt price it into the option list cause they didn't think it'd be that big on a 1 series??? Mind you, can someone who has a 135i or 128i tell me.. when you're like stationary, how far do you have to turn the steering wheel to do a u-turn? |
