What is this vent??

I changed my air & cabin air filters today. :-D.

While I had the hood up I noticed a HUGE pile of leaves in the area behind each of the hinges!! So I got out the shop vac and cleaned them out. Soon as I vacuumed the leaves out I noticed that there is a vent in there. Strange...

Anyone know where or what this vent goes to??

AND yes I know, I know... I said it was a HUGE pile of leaves.

Interesting. Why does it have a vent cover then? Seems it just catches leaves and crap. I guess so it doesn't get clogged.

It's because there isn't a straight path down to the bottom. It goes through the wheel well lining and it gets all clogged up, hence the screen.

With that being said if stuff gets down there it's nothing harmful. You may just need to flush it out every once in a great while.

As other have said, it's essentially a very big drain hole, like the kind that relieve water accumulation in the sunroof cutout areas of other cars.

While we're on this subject, both of my cars have come with a nice accumulation of leaves in the pictured drainage area and along with other areas like the trunk surround and the crevice behind the lower front fenders that's visible with the doors open. I find that the 135i is among the worst cars I've owned in terms of leaf and grime accumulation in these areas, and it sucks. I've made it a point to clean them out as best I can, but I know there's still some junk in there. Down the line we may seem some rust accumulate from this on more neglected cars.

As you said, to prevent debris from getting inside and blocking it.

All German cars i have owned have that, including my 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo, which is one of the areas you check for rust.

After removing the leaves and the screen, I put a hose down the drain to blow out all the crap that makes it past the screen. A noticeable a out of dirt and crap came out the bottom of the car and I had no crazy electrical issues as a result. Recommend doing this so often to keep the drain open and avoid the potential for developing rust.
