well 300hp for the 135 and 230hp for the 128 if my math is right thats 70 and if you go ahead and say 306 hp for the 135 thats 76hp..... im counting hahaha
for reliability reasons id choose to mod the 128i to get extra hp over the 135i... i have seen alot of people mod FI cars and watch them get destroyed in a matter of no time |

i couldn't afford a 135. stepping down from the STI I wish i had a little more power that said. i do NOT regret getting the 128 at all. its just enough for street use, and it's helping me save money for my Lotus and still very enjoyable to drive. i have a feeling it'll be very competative in AutoX as well. |

I was comparing his fit vs the 128, which is well over 100.
No harm meant just a lost in translation 'less than funny' comment. |

Though not as close...
Same reason I'm still keeping the e39 540, modded, vs an M5. Though the power difference is a bit more (310 vs 400), the 'saved' insurance more than makes up for it. Of course, I'm a hypocrite. If my wife didn't have the 135 in coupe, my vert would be it :|

My fault, I was talking about the 70hp difference between the 135 and 128 in my post originally. That is funny you picked up on that... the Fit is my DD, I wouldn't even dare to compare .... well unless you want to do MPG's! |

I'm just a lurker who dreams of a 1 - soon I'll go test drive both back to back, but I go back and forth in my mind which is better, the NA or the FI.
It comes down to what I'd do with the car - I'd daily drive it and probably keep it forever. I have plenty of power in my lightly modded MCS, so I can't imagine the 128 would leave me wanting... Then I think about the 4k saved and I think about light rims/tires and possibly some track time (but not too much, that's what the MCS is for). So push comes to shove, I'd probably go with the 128. Someone brought up an interesting point above about why there isn't as much in this forum as there is in the N54 forum. I wonder if it has to do with the type of person and the type of decision that goes into choosing 300 hp vs. 230. Maybe it's a vast generalization, but the people who opt for that power output, who opt for a car on par (speed-wise) with far more expensive cars, who want optimal performance, might also be the people who are most likely to tweak and push the engine to its limits. The people who make the choice to go for "less" might also be the people who are content with what they've got or just appreciate different driving dynamics (I believe the 128 engine is lighter, no?). Then all of that logic goes out the window when you imagine that for a measly $4k extra (if you're already purchasing) you could have what might be BMW's most impressive shot at getting back to making affordable cars for the driving purist in the 135i. So yea, I'm confused. mb

I'm very satisfied with my 128 and am looking forward to autox it next season if I can. the 128 is lighter overall, the engine itself i think is lighter, plus you dont have all the extra plumbing/exhaust work for the two turbos. I'd venture that's the majority of the wieght savings there. |

I think both cars are great. Another reason I think people may be hesitant when it comes to the 135 is they may not be too familiar with FI and are very familiar with N/A. Its not a bad thing, its just different. Some people, while not necessarily afraid, worry about change. When something is foreign to someone, they may not want to step into the unknown and are content with what they already know, because its been working great for them for a long time. Just my observation.
Also, for those that are worried about reliability of an FI engine, not just the N54, but FI in general, it comes down to how well built and/or tuned the car is. Forced Induction scares people off because they have a buddy that had a bad experience or a friend that had a bad experience. I work at a performance shop and I can tell you first hand that FI cars can be just as reliable as an N/A, provided you take the necessary steps to keep it in shape and maintain it. When a customer burns a hole in there piston or blows something up, its usually the owners fault. I.E. you can't just turn up the boost or swap the turbo and expect everything to be all hunky dory. I have numerous friends that run FI on there cars and they have been running insane power for years and years without any problems. Why, they take care of the vehicle and make sure its tuned properly and so on and so forth. Now, I am not saying anyone on here won't take care of their car, just please keep in mind that FI can be a little bit more cumbersome to maintain and keep an eye on, but is still a great way to go if you are willy to do so.

not sure if i'm right, but it seems to me that if you can put a bodykit on a 135 you could put the same one on a 128, since they're the exact same cars with different engines. i think the only things that could be 135 specific are engine mods (tuning, exhaust, etc.). correct me if i'm wrong though. |

I bought my 128i because of gas milage, I purchased my car back when gas was almost 4.20 a gallon and the 128 i believe had 19 mpg city and 29 hway, now that gas is under 2$ its no longer an issue. But i do not regret getting the 128i at all. It has tremoundous power for a N/A v6 3 liter. Once new mods have come out, and my warrenty is up I'm definetly gonna beef up the 128i and im sure it'll b keeping up with the 135 no problem.

I believe that the 128 and 135 get the same MPG or very close to it.
I am surprised that I only get 22mpg with mostly highly driving. But the power is great! |
