BMW warranty will pay to replace it. IF not go thru your comp(ins) coverage. But I think this is a common problem.

I don't see why they wouldn't replace it for free, whether or not the car has a warranty or not. Is it labeled somewhere in the manual or where ever that this will happen? Or not to drive above a certain speed, at a certain time of day during a certain time of year with the windows up and sunroof closed? Sounds like a battle to be won.......at least I know about this now.

I recall this was very common with the 3-series back a few years ago. GL...should be covered under warranty, but as I recall the dealers were trying to make everyone go through insurance by claiming a rock shattered the glass on the Hwy.

I had a 2000 3 series which on one day when I opened the sunroof something got caught and the tracks self destructed. BMW paid to fix it.

It's heat stress. I came home one day to find my sliding glass door in the same condition... little pellets of glass everywhere...it apparently happens sometimes with safety glass due to the different layers.

I had this happen to a shower screen while I was in the shower. Was left there standing there naked in shock and the whole bathroom was covered in glass.

My Sunroof explosion
Wanted to post another sunroof explosion case...this happenned to me this morning while I was driving at highway speeds on the DVP! It sounded like a bullet and the glass shards and chunks came down on my hair and all around me..Luckily, I managed to change 3 lanes to exit and pull over to nearest road. Insurance is still determining if it's a mfg defect, where they will not cover. But BMW said that since my car is outside of warranty already, they may not cover it too...I'm still anxious to hear the decision, which they won't be able to confirm until 4 days later on Tuesday!

Have seen it happen it many different makes and models. Surprised the hell out of me when my quarter glass exploded like that in my Cooper.. Service manager said it was the first time he'd seen quarter glass do that.. usually sunroofs.

Is it possible that the moonroof is so snug that it cracked/ruptured due to thermal expansion?
I have heard a number of stories regarding rear windows exploding because people accidentally left their rear defroster on...

Now I'm scared of my sunroof. I hope you weren't hurt, and everything gets taken care of smoothly by BMW.

had something similar with the back window of my '02 V40 wagon after an accident : the torsion in the structure of the car induced stress in the glass that lead to an explosion (kind of scary), I would imagine that some sort of stress happened in the frame of your sunroof. A rock or any collision would have break it in a different way

Why I wish the 135i could have been ordered without a sunroof. I have not used it once since I got my 135i in April. It's absence would also reduce the car's weight (not much but ever bit helps).
