Thanks for your valuable advice! I have since bought a CTEK Multi XS 3600 "smart" charger and charged all three cars over the weekend - each took between 8 to 16 hours to bring up to full charge. I need to get a multimeter so I can do a quantitative analysis of my battery status. As I do not drive the 135i much now I will leave it attached to the CTEK.

Sprey - did you leave your car unlocked over that period (as I did)? Leaving the car unlocked apparently causes a drain on the battery.
