Newbie 135i owner intro, Bluetooth question
My wife and I are long time BMW fans and as you can see in the sig, we have a stable full of Bavarian machinery. We just purchased a nearly new 135i from Stevens Creek BMW here in the Bay Area. The car is for my wife, but hopefully she'll let me drive it from time to time.
It didn't take a very long test drive for her to fall in love with the car and a few hours later it was in our garage. We love the dark blue (Deep Sea Blue Metallic) paint and the grey interior is beautiful as well. Her car has the M Sport package but we will most likely be treating her to some performance upgrades in the near future. In the mean time, we're trying to figure out how to get the head unit to accept her iPhone/iPod. I've read some posts on the subject and understand that we need the Y-adapter cable from BMW, but we're unclear about Bluetooth. It appears that Bluetooth is only available with iDrive. Is this the case? Our car does not have iDrive. We will really be disappointed if she can't use her phone with the head unit in the car to make and receive calls. The buttons on are on steering wheel but again, without iDrive I don't understand how to connect the phone to the head unit (for making calls, not for listening to music). We're looking forward to participating in the forum and having lots of fun with the new baby. My wife has tracked and auto-crossed her MRoadster, so we're definitely looking forward to putting "Saphire" she's been dubbed to good use as well. -tj and chela noto

Bluetooth is available without iDrive, it comes in the premium package. If your car has BMW Assist, you will also have Bluetooth. Can't help you with pairing because I do have iDrive which makes pairing really easy.

OK, cool. So the next stupid question is, how do I know if we have BMW Assist?

Here is a good video tutorial.
If you have the BMW Assist you have hands free capabilities but will need the cable to connect to the USB port should your car be equipped for music. The port is under the arm rest by the 12v socket. |

Does anyone know how to pair my phone (Samsung GS II) so it will play music?
The phone is paired via bluetooth for phone calls, but is there a way to pair to stream my music via bluetooth? I am NON iDrive.

Yes I have a non-iDrive 2012 135 (no BMW Assist) and I don't believe I can stream audio via Bluetooth. I can configure it so my phone works but no music streaming.
I bought the obscenely overpriced y-cable and I can stream music through that, though its kind os a pain in the ass compared to using Bluetooth.

I believe the Y cable should come with the car....if I remember correctly reading the manual. I bought a CPO and made sure they gave me the cable.
Enjoy the new vert! |

I have a 2012 135 w/iDrive and I can stream music from my iPhone via bluetooth. I just upgraded to the new Galaxy S3 and haven't tried music over bluetooth, but did find out the I am now able to read my text and emails on the iDrive screen with my GS3. I can have the system read me my message as well.

Only if you have iDrive. I have a 12 w/ BMW Assist & Enhanced Bluetooth but A2DP doesn't work. There isn't an option for bluetooth audio on the head unit.

I have had great luck with my iPhone 4 and the iLink Bluetooth reciever, described in my mount installation post here: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...ht=iphone+kuda
It just plugs into the Y cable under the armrest, and you pair your phone with it - it sees the iLink as a pair of speakers, so it doesn't block the native Bluetooth phone interface. Plays iTunes and Pandora, my nav instructions override nicely (both Apple and Google) - the only thing it doesn't do is support the control functions (pause, start, skip) and put the artist and title on my display, which worked when I had the phone connected directly to the Y cable under the armrest. |
