I can tell that you're new. We've all been debating this for months now. Nobody knows for sure yet. Welcome to the forum

The things that are making me think it will have a single exhaust is that its already on a small chassis, its only a TT6 engine and not the V8 like an M3, and its not really that much wider than an E36. It also doesnt make sense to test it without the dual exhaust because then the current tests woiuldnt have final performance numbers due to factors such as the weight it might add or even the extra performance afforded by the exhaust.

I heard on the grapevine, Akrapovic is soon to develop a Ti system for the 135i...I wonder if they will be doing anything in conjunction with BMW or if it will be a straight(ish) swap...???

3.2l e46 had quads...dont see why they shouldnt have them on the 1 M? Makes it trickier to 'fake' a 1 M with a 123d

Here's what Lexus did on the IS-F, because there seemed to be an overwhelming preference for quads from potential buyers for their M3 rival as well. Pray BMW does not give in to this madness.

I just thought: What if the "M1" came with on side double exhaust, and quad exhaust was part of the "Personalisation Programe"?

Personally....I think a set of duals right out the rear center would look badass. Aka 2002. It would be totally different and set it off as very unique!!!

Yes, I am.
No reason for a quad on an inline 6 that is turbocharged. One single downpipe or downpipecollector will exit the enginebay, on the lefthand side.
The 1 series needs to go on a diet, I think we all acknowlegde that.

Lets start with the exhaust then....

+1. Quads are becoming a bit of a fad (IMHO). Heck, my 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT had them.

I vote for the duals coming out the center. But hey, I'll be happy with whatever is on the car. I'm just glad BMW is making it. Hope they don't price it too high.

well i really hope they put either quads or the single double pipe in the center.. i really honestly wouldn't buy the 1m if they didn't. id just buy the m3 or an e46 m3.

My order of preference would be:

1) Dual exhaust out the center (ala 2002)
2) Dual exhaust on the left side
3) Quad exhaust.

If this car is an inline 6 with a turbo on top, then a quad exhaust is completely fake and even though the majority here seem to be ok with the fake quads and probably even the fake side vents on ///M cars, I still only accept the quads on the V8 M5 and V8 M3 because they really have two cylinder banks. This is not a honda and we don't need to 'show' the power of the car by how many exhausts it has sticking out the back!

I still like the uniqueness factor of the dual out the center that the 2002 had and so I definitely vote for that as #1 -- as this car is sure to be a rare care from its limited production run and likely limited number of people who will accept it without having quads and fake hood scoops, etc..

1) M5s are V10s.

2) Quad's aren't fake if all the pipes actually expel exhaust.

Realistically, any vehicle could get away with a single pipe. Ever seen the exhaust on school buses and commercial trucks? Anyway, does it fvcking matter what the exhaust layout is??????? I would like there to be pipes on both sides of the car. Duals or quads don't make any difference to me - I just like the symmetry. But it's not like my decision on whether or not to buy the car is going to be based on the number of exhaust tips.

Are you that annoying kid in class that points out every little mistake! Anyways, my mind sometimes drifts to the E39 M5 instead of the V10 E60 M5. Regardless, the point is, V10 or V8 there are two banks of cylinders each with its own need for exhaust. an inline-6 only needs one exhaust line. The quads on the E46 M3 are fake because they are 4 exhaust pipes coming out of one center mounted can.

For the superficiallities amongst us, then I guess an exhaust system is only a layout too look cool, but to the real gear heads here, we know its a joke, the same as a hood scoop for a car with an inline 6 cylinder. Luckily it looks like the majority of the buyers for this car will be the gearheads, the superficial car buyers can stick with their quads in another car

All BMW M cars having exhaust tips on one side. None of them had the exhaust exactly in the middle even if they were close to the middle:

2002 turbo (E20)
3.0 CSL (E9)
M1 (E26)
M 3.0 / 3.0i / 3.3i / 3.5i / 535i (E12)
M635 CSi (E24)
M5 (E28)
M3 (E30)
M3 (E36)
