LSD Query

OK gent's, I'm interested to hear what LSD people are running in their 135's:
Where they had it installed and any comments about the diff and the installation process (might be nice to know the cost as well if you're willing to divulge).

I think DCT are welded diff and your only option is Quaife.

I've got Wavetrac and it works well.

Any issues with the Wavetrac?

I read one report in the Internet from a guy who had a clunk in his Wavetrac and now it's all over the Internet that they are noisy. I'm interested to know the truth.

I have never heard of anyone having issues with Wavetrac. Quaife have been in the game for a lot longer but there is nothing wrong with Wavetrac. My workshop installed both Quaife and Wavetrac and he believes the quality and fitment of the Wavetrac was better. They both function exactly the same way except the Wavetrac still works if one wheel is off the ground.

Thanks for that, pretty much what I suspected. Bad experiences tend to grow legs on the net.

Anyone else in the Melbourne area got experience with Quaife, Wavetrac or others?

You'll be right with either I reckon

I have the quaife, no noise, no clunking, would think it was stock.

Much better traction, traction control light doesn't come on anywhere near as much

Crusty if you have dct and after stock ratio you have one choice Quaife and it ain't gonna be cheap. After iirc about late 07 you have welded ring gear and you are looking at circa 5k

All gear type LSD units are quite ie Wavetrac or Quafe. It is only the clutch pack type that can get noisy, this mostly happens when you are maneuvering in a car park or do a u turn. They come in three types 1 way, 1.5 way and as in my other car a 2 way, i can say that if i do any slow turn the back of the car will jump and the wheels will hop of the ground sounds really bad but that's how it is
If you are building a track day car its best to go for a clutch pack type as fitted to the M3, but for road and drag racing a gear type is just fine and would be my choice for 135 or 335 BMW, unless you can find a M3 back end

Thanks guy's, good info flowing now. I've had a few rally cars over the years that had clutch type LSD's so I can appreciate the comments there - I don't think scrubbing tyres during slow speed manoeuvres would particularly suit (they were pretty full-on diffs in the rally cars).

I think I'm leaning toward the Wavetrac (they do a DCT specific unit). Can anyone recommend trusted installers in the Melbourne area?

Do you know of anyone who has welded out their stock diff?!

Can't imagine it being much fun, bouncing round corners and such...

Can anyone help me out, my dilemna is that I had purchased a wavetrac diff centre through a mate who runs a large aftermarket parts store (JDM stuff) he got a wavetrac lsd diff for me from another store that was much cheaper then buying it new and having it shipped from the us to Australia that was for a customers 2007 335i A/T but was never purchased.

I have a 2006 6MT & I initially had thought that all 2007 335i wavetracs were the same part number (30.309.170WK) so it should be interchangeable looking at their listing, but I only just noticed that late model 2007 have a different part # (30.309.175WK)

Looking at their application chart its the same part # for a pre 07 MT or AT:

Since receiving the diff I cannot find any identification which states what model diff I have, is it possible to tell from the pics below:

Yes I realise the late models are different due to the welded ring gear, what I'm seeking is actually what diff centre I actually have, is it the 170WK or the later model 175WK?

I have sent wavetrac an email with no response, in the meantime I came across this thread and thought I would add a post as the forum is full of guys who are extremely knowledgeable and helpful

In theory, the WT is meant to work with one wheel in the air... However I witnessed a Wavetrac equipped 135i cabrio entering a steep driveway with one wheel in the air and it just sat there spinning. So curiously, the diff didn't do its thing. Owner was puzzled as well.

That's strange. I've been in the same situation before coming up a driveway and could feel the lsd working. I've been really happy with my WT.

If you have a 06 335i, then you will have the larger pumpkin. I can't see any information on the Wavetrac diff center as to what pumpkin it suits. The box might have some more information. Otherwise, you'll have to call wavetrac.

See here for an explanation of diffs:
http://www.vacmotorsports.com/blog/w.../diffchart.jpg

Do you know what manufacture date of the BMW that the original purchaser was buying the diff for? If its later than Sep 07, it won't fit (according to VAC).

The box seems non de script with just wavetrac type masking tape securing it by memory... I shall have another look!

Looking at this thread, the diff centre appears different and it is supposedly a 'small' type whic suits the 2007-2009 AT:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...light=wavetrac

The same diff in an earlier FS thread:

Wavetrac got back to me, I have the 30.309.170WK which is good news

Since the AT runs a 3.46 ratio, it shall be interesting to see how this translates into the 6MT, 1st gear shall be pretty snappy with a tune!

Nice work!

I'm not sure if the core will change the drive ratio tho. Anyone chime in here?

both wavetrac and quaife list a final drive ratio change as separate (and significantly more expensive)

if i were to get a 3.73 for my diff (what quaife offers) would be $3800 AUD.. though i'm guessing if you buy a final drive replacement, you don't ahve to buy the LSD.. AS WELL?
