Weighbridge Results
Hi All,

Not posted on this forum since completion of SBM17 by
Andrew Brien. http://www.southernbm.com.au/gallery...s.php?album=23

Last week we had the chance to accurately weigh the car. For those interested she came in at 1640Kg. Here are the details:

Front Left (passenger side) 380Kg.
Front Right (drivers Side) 460Kg.
Rear Left 380Kg.
Rear Right 420KG.

Total weight of 1640Kg included:
Full Tank of 98RON: 55kg
Space Saver Tyre in boot plus Jack and Brace: 15Kg
Overweight Driver: 90Kg
Chocolate Eclairs: 2Kg

Removing the driver produced the following:
Front Left: 360kg
Front Right: 420Kg
Rear Left: 370Kg
Rear Right: 400Kg.

Total Weight 1550kg.

For some reason the car is 90Kg heavier on the right side. Not sure why but suspect might have something to do with majority production being LHD for
USA and Europe.

If only I could drive from the passenger seat!!!

Mike...

Hi Mike, haven't heard from you for awhile! Welcome back.

Can I ask what is the spec of your car? That isn't that heavy. 1550kg with 55litre of fuel is probably less than what I expected if you have roof, nav etc.

How much weight do you figure you would save by removing the subs? Is it worth it? IMO, I don't think it is.

Hi Way.

Good to hear from you.

Just got back from a blast around the Snowy Mountains with SBM16. Previous in Tasmania attempting to knock off some particularly fast STI's.
Specs are same as yours, Tried to keep the weight down when ordering so no sunroof or other heavy bits. The car has all the AB mods wih Standard wheels and Proxy R1R's 225/40R18 and 245/40R18 rear.

Have been having problems with tyres, rears rubbed so had to get both guards rolled. what size are your RE55's?

I am running 225/40 all round. You do realise that your 245 would be much wider than the factory one? My 225 is wider than the OE 245! I want to put 265 semi-slicks all round, but I think I will need a wide body kit to do that lol.

Hi Mike. Fascinating results. Your theory about the right-side weight bias sounds about right. But it's still a shame for the RHD side of the world. Where/how did you do these tests? Balances with a half tonne capacity are not particularly common!

Right heavy is ok. I know it is a bit exaggerated.

What we need to see is cross camber weight.
(L rear + R front) / Total weight or (R rear + L front)/total weight = 45-55%

With driver (hey I weight the same!)
L rear + R front = 840kg = 51.2%
R rear + L front = 800kg = 48.8%

Cross camber = 51.2% which is not bad!

My track car - they refuse to do anything when with me on it gets 50.2% hehe.

Interesting Taka. What's the rationale behind that calculation?

Across the front and rear wheel, it helps to judge the balance of the car while cornering. Like below my track car is being corner balanced. They use RF/LR is the bench mark. Of course, getting left/right and front as close to 50% as possible. I am sitting in the car with helmet on (hehe)... and the mechanics took this picture

It is near impossible to get LF = RF and LR = RR, mainly because of the design of the car. I doubt even that is achieved in F1???

Interesting one this, as most types of cars have it...

I've read it's more to do with resonance/vibration control and an electrical earthing mass than weight distribution :iono:

Would be a good one to look up and find out exactly what that heavy mass/chunk of iron is for...it's got to be the heaviest single piece of weight hanging (seemingly uselessly) to the car, that you'd want to remove for an instant large weight reduction to the vehicle.

I've also noticed that these weights are on the same side of a given type of vehicle whether right or left hand drive, surely this will affect weight distribution/handling to some extent...

Probably due to mass production.
