The stock gauge is basically there to show you if you are either normal or in trouble. It is not a typical “gauge”.

The water warms up very fast, but BMW wants you to keep the revs down until the oil is warm.

Because we don't have a traditional water pump. Our 135i's have an electric pump that lets the engine warm up quickly for less emissions. So... IF we had a coolant gauge the needle would be moving all around the gauge. BMW solution was to just delete the water temp. The electric pump allows for faster warmups but also no HP loss from being driven off the crankshaft. Its a win win!

You could buy the digital BMW Performance steering wheel that has digital readouts for oil AND water temps.

Personally I like just having an oil temp gauge. I prefer an oil gauge over just having a coolant gauge - IF - I had to choose only one.

Now... IF I could choose a regular dipstick over a digital gauge I think we know which one most of us would choose!

I have a water temp gauge. It doesn't move around. It rises steadily to around 206 and, for normal driving, stays there.

If you mean the gauge under your tachometer, that is oil temp. 249F oil temp is okay.

It is a $160 ScanGauge 2, mounted on the column like in this pic, right below our odometer. I use it to read error codes and display IAT, water temp, MPH, and voltage. It can display some other useful stuff, but not boost, oil pressure or fuel pressure.
