Windshield replacement

Anyone had to have their windshield replaced? Mine has a number of cracks starting in the area where the right hand windshield wiper is attached.

The company that is going to replace the windshield says a 1M uses the same windshield as a 135. Anyone know if that's true?

Mine was replaced. Just make sure they use the "factory" gasket (if you will) around the glass. Mine was an aftermarket one and it made horrible noise inside the cabin. I had BMW replace it with the factory one and all is good. Although the glass that was replaced is pitted so bad that I need another new one! Such BS...

I got a chip in my windshield the second week I had my car. I have a warranty on the glass but the crack wasn't large enough to justify a replacement at the time. It's been repaired to say the least.

Mine is getting replaced this Tuesday. Got a large crack from a rock that came off a semi. I'll take a cracked windscreen over a dent/scratch on the hood or roof any day! Just make sure it's OEM not aftermarket. I have Allstate zero deductible replacement and they cover OEM but only if requested.

Mine is being replaced tomorrow as it happens, huge crack down the bottom after a bolder collision (w@nker overtaking and pulling back in less than a meter in front on the motorway) thanks god it didn't come into contact with any body part as it took one hell of a chunk of windscreen....

Did they fit this 'factory gasket' with the screen?

It took the windshield company (Safe Lite) 2 trips to replace my windshield. The first service call lasted about 5 minutes. The tech decided correctly that he would need the molding from the dealer because none of their stock stuff would work.

On the second call the replacement went smoothly. It took about an hour. The glass is even the same brand as the original but without the BMW Roundel. The equipment for removing the windshield was interesting - A machine that sits in the car and pulls a wire around the old windshield to break the seal.

The tech told me that the Safe Lite's database had been updated to say that 128s, 135s and 1Ms must use a dealer supplied molding.

A world of warning - Don't open the hood when the windshield wipers are in the up position.

Did mine today, all OEM parts from the dealer. Took less than 15 mins.

I was worried they would use piano wire to go around the edges but he told me thats a 20+ year old method. Just pulled the molding off. Ran a long blade behind the dash and pulled the glass straight out.

Was told when I learned to drive that if you ever get trapped inside your car, unable to open doors and windows, while escape is urgent for saving your life: unbuckle, slide a bit down in your seat, put both feet against the windscreen and give a hard push. Windscreen should pop out in one piece.

I'm planning on having Safelite replace mine in the next week or so. Did you take your vehicle in or opt for the mobile repair service? Is there any reason why I shouldn't use one of their mobile guys?

Mobile repair usually means only one guy. I would take it in and ask to have 2 guys doing it so the windshield drops in evenly.

When I scheduled mine, after knowing what car I had, they even suggested to wait until a manager was available and brought in the guy with the most experience in their region.

Cost of the dealership doing this? I want OEM glass and OEM gaskets.

Don't forget to get the rain sensor re-calibrated with the new glass. People have reported malfunctions without doing so.
